What type of amp is recommended for a Bass VI?
I've been thinking about getting a Bass VI (someday), and was wondering if a guitar amp is suitable, or do you need a bass amp. My only amp right now is a Super Reverb.

Re: What type of amp is recommended for a Bass VI?
i once posed that question somewhat differently, and asked if folks could recommend an amp that would do double duty for a Jazzmaster and a Bass VI; i was downsizing at the time, and wanted to pare down to a single amp for space. as i recall, a lot of folks reported using guitar amps for their VI with no problems, and i wound up buying a Bassman 4x10 which i like a lot. another fellow reported using a Peavey 4x10 with a 15-inch extension cabinet, which also sounded like a cool configuration.

Re: What type of amp is recommended for a Bass VI?
I (with a Jaguar Baritone, but I'm eagerly awaitng my CS Bass VI
) gig as more of a bassist, so I use an Eden WT-405 w/an Eden XST210 and a Gallien-Krueger 210. I used to have a Peavey TNT115 (also bass amp), but it did not work well with the Jaguar Baritone. It was too muddy and not bassy enough, so not only was the JagBari unconvincing in the bass role, the amp also muddied up the chords and high notes which are the whole point of the instrument (to me, anyway). I feel like you get more clairity and highs with the 10" speakers, but the Eden head and cab also really deliver on the bass aspect. The Gallien Krueger is just an extension cab for more room so I can stop blowing out speakers.
Guitar amps work too though, especially if that's the sound you're going for! Playing through a Hot Rod Deluxe sounds really good and you get a surprising amount of bass. I also played through my guitarist's Bassman (212 I think), and it sounded great....nice bass, bit of sparkle, bad-ass all around. For me, though, the real bass rig is what I need.
I guess it depends on what you want to do!

A Super Reverb is a great amp for a bass VI. You can get those cool Beach Boys sounds. Do you ave a reissue or vintage? A vintage one with alnico speakers will sound great but you can blow the speakers if you're not careful.Hawaii 5-0 wrote: I've been thinking about getting a Bass VI (someday), and was wondering if a guitar amp is suitable, or do you need a bass amp. Early '80s Peavey solid state amps like the Musician Mark III or Bass Mark III are also a favorite of many VI players.

My Super Reverb is a 72 silver face, converted to a blackface circuit. It's covered in tweed with oxblood grille cloth. Kinda looks like a bassman.

I would think a SR would be perfect for a VI

I use bass amps and guitar amps. I prefer guitar amps (Twin, VOX Valvetronix). I would use a bass amp if I was providing primarily a core bass role and needed the headroom and volume of the bass amp. Guitar amps tend to give the VI a more unique tone and character.

WHY the Vox AC30??
Times change. Remember when dog Jimmy used to go white and chalky? Now it grows hair! We got used to it. We'll get used to poly. -blueavenger

Re: What type of amp is recommended for a Bass VI?
i find the vox's frequency response to be amazing, and the low end i get out of this thing is stunning. im actually quite surprised how much low end i can get out of the ac30.
its got a great sound, the overdrive is amazing, its loud as all hell, and highly interactive to your playing (dynamic).
and it looks classy as hell. i mean, show me a more handsome amp. i dare you.

I can SORT OF second this. I have a Jerry Jones 3-pick-up 6-string bass and always end up using a Vox AC 30 simulation when recording dry. Compared to this combination all other simus lack something. It’s perfectly complex. But my VI is not a Fender, nor is the Vox a real amp, so take it with a grain of salt.mewithoutus wrote: i find the vox's frequency response to be amazing, and the low end i get out of this thing is stunning. im actually quite surprised how much low end i can get out of the ac30.
