I got... A LES PAUL!?!?

Post by heavenstreet » Sun Nov 04, 2007 11:33 am

I'm a closet Gibson freak, and while I love a good Les Paul I've always been a sucker for the old worm and beat up ones as opposed to anything I could get at Guitar Center.  I used to think a Les Paul was the only guitar that shouldn't look beat up but changed in my mind too.

So I went to a local store here on the East Side of Portland with hopes to bring home a Eastwood Airline or Supro reissue, not really set on any model.  This store has a really great oddball used selection too... from cool Japanese Fenders to weird Univoxs, Teiscos and Strat copies galore.  I spotted three guitars that interested me: the Airline Jack White-style guitar in Sunburst, a Highway 1 Strat that was beat up and a 90's Gibson Les Paul Special with the P-100's.  The Airline felt great, sounded stale, but I've heard you need to replace the pickups with the custom shop ones Eastwood makes.  The Strat was amazing.  It had what I call pop... where when you hit it with a pick it kinda barks or skronks... I love that personally.  But the Les Paul Special immediately crushed both in tone, feel and everything honestly.  The pickups are much, much louder.  I spent the first two days just playing on the neck pickup and loving how bassy it sounds.  I just recently started playing with the bridge and was suprised how much bass came through but of course more treble but NOT clarity... both sound very clear and I'm pleased the neck pick up has low end oomph to it too.

I looked at the headstock and there was indeed a repaired crack.  This almost scared me away but 1. I trust the shop and they kept it around and gigged with it and it stayed in tune, properly intonated, etc. and 2. I've never really been bothered by that sort of thing and have played/owned a few guitars with repaired head stocks that just ruled.

And the pride was under 500 bucks... so I snagged it.  Pictures tonight.  Here is the model...

Hmm, Pretty cool deal man. I like those kind of Les Pauls, they seem thinner and more rad than the normal les pauls.

Centaur Guitar right?  They're the only place I know in P-Town that has Eastwoods.  Personally I thought they were low quality for the price tag, but the Italias!  Man, those were cool.

Congrats on the LP though, I love me some P-90s.

i have a les paul studio that i dont use much any more because it dosnt have a tremolo, but installing a bigsby would certainly fix that

i imagine that it would be a pretty tough and likely easy to screw up mad, any of you ever added one to a guitar? was it as tricky as i would think it would be?

Sweet - I used to have a mid 90s LP Special double cut in that color.  It was a tone beast and felt amazing.  I sold it and a SF Pro Reverb to help fund purchase of my old 61 JM.  Thinking back I wish I had kept the LP Special and found something else to sell but I guess that's how it goes.  I really wish I had it back.  I think mine had P-90s though - I got the model that didn't have P-100s.

Les Paul Specials are pretty cool. The p-100’s are good sound pick ups. I used to have a Les Paul Special like the one you bought. It was the second guitar I owned.  I got it for $450.00 from some guy that was trying to get rid of all his guitars before his ex wife got her hands on them. He was getting a divorce and his ex wife was trying to take every guitar he owned from him in the divorce settlement.  Anyways, I sold it in 1999 for $480.00 to pay for my Jaguar.

Headstocks breaking off Les Pauls and SGs are a common problem. They can be fixed luckily, although it does give one the willies after spending shitloads of money on the guitar, then opeining the case someday and in horror seeing the "decapitated"  Paul. Scarier than any horror movie I ever saw.. :o

Congrats heavenstreet! Sounds like a great deal to me.

I like the Specials a lot and will probably pick one up some time. I'd prefer a 55-77 or one from the custom shop converted to TOM + stop bar (I can't bear the wraparounds), but one of the early 90s models (neck binding disappeared in '96 or thereabouts) would surely do the trick.
Bigger in sum than parts.
