+1

I use the dynamic a lot more as an effect when playing acoustic that with electric (I use quite alot of compressoin on my electric sound - taking away the dynamics) - I seldom use plectrum when playing acoustics either - using a technique picking with thumb, index and long finger + strumming with back of all fingers (hard to explain) - to get both bassline/melody and chords from one instrument.
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

I think i understood that. Same with me here. I sometimes tend to use that gypsy (?) technique quite a lot, in which you strum the E&A-Strings up with your thumb and then the lower strings with the back of your hand/fingernails.
Doesn't sound gypsy at all. :-[

I'm trying to teach myself The River Man by Nick Drake at the moment.

Man, I'm close to banging my head against the wall. The singing & the chord shapes are easy. It's the timing thats the killer.

I'm determined to nail this tune though, its absolutely beautiful.

I highly recommend you to play all acoustics you can find. It's very important to find a guitar that has a comfortable neck. It's like test driving and picking the car you liked the most.
I'm quite a lot into Blueridge guitars since i played a few. They're not only Mertin copies, they're very fine guitars actually. Awesome sound and handling, even if the neck is quite small.
I'll have to play them a little more, but i think i'm going to buy one.

Nick Drake was brilliant. The right hand stuff is the killer with his material. Also, River Man is in 5/4, so unless you're used to playing in 5/4, that alone is going to cause problems. Play slowly, and count until you can do it smoothly.

I would second that recommendation. As I said earlier, acoustic guitars are like living, breathing creatures. They can be very individual and unique. I found a gem in a low-priced acoustic guitar once. I was looking for a "beater" that I could abuse to some extent and not have to worry about it. The store had 2 these identical models that caught my eye. I strummed the first one and knew right away that it was not for me. However, when I strummed the second one I was shocked. I picked it up and played it and knew that I wanted that one. I was teaching guitar at the time and in a hurry to get home to give a lesson. All the way home I thought....."I should have bought it"....."Why, didn't I just buy it"? One thing that made me hesitate was that I had just going to buy an expensive acoustic, and the same store had some on order. I was waiting for them to come in so I could try them out. Anyway, I made up my mind to go back and get the beater. However, we got a huge snowstorm that snowed me in for a few days, and on top of that I got the flu. I was down and out for a bout a week. I imagined my guitar being gone, because they were running a Christmas sale. When I was able to go back to the music shop, I walked in and saw only one guitar there. I knew the good was gone. Just to make sure I went and checked, One strum was all it took. Someone bought my guitar!  >:(  :'(  :?

I knew the owner well, and I told him of my plans and what happened. He informed me that one of the guitar-playing employees at the store had discovered that guitar. He put it back for himself......but he had not bought it yet. He had ordered a Martin and was waiting for it to come in. Well, it had come in a day or two earlier so the owner said he didn't know if the guy would still buy MY guitar or not. He went and asked, and the dude let me have it! I was thrilled! And, although Christmas was over he let me have it at the ealier sale price. I always get good discounts there anyway, but this was a little better deal that I would normally ave gotten. So, it all worked out in the end.

I said all that to tell you how vital it is to actually play and hear and acoustic. They are a different animal. The same exact guiatrs can sound different. In my case, I had 2 exactly alike except for the serial numbers. One I would not have had because it sounded so awful and I worried and drooled over the other one for over a week because it sounded so good.....much better than it should have for the price range it was in. Sometimes you can find a gem that will surprise you!

I've just bid on a Seagull S6 and - f*ck, i won.
I haven't realised it now because it was like 1 minute ago, but i don't know if i should be happy or crying.
On the one hand, i wanted a good steel string acoustic and Seagulls are good, but on the other hand, there's that Blueridge in that store which seems to wait for me ever since i first played it.
Could somebody please encourage me?

Should take weeks until it's here...

Congratulations! I have a 1993 Seagull S-6 CE with a factory-installed L.R. Baggs Duet System. I love mine. Mine is Sitka top with Maple back & sides, with ebony fingerboard and bridge. LaSiDo used to build high-quality instruments. I'm not sure how the company is now. By the way, when was yours made? When I was searching for an acoustic I actually found a "shootout" article in guitar player about mid-priced acoustics. The Seagull S6-CE with the L.R. Baggs system won the plugged in sound competition. This sparked my interest because I would be using it to gig with, I wanted a guitar that would sound great amplified without having to use a mic. I went to my local music shop and started trying out Seagull acoustics. I was pretty amazed.....almost shocked at the sound and quality of there instruments for the asking price. I ended up buying one!

I still want a Taylor really badly. Even if got a Taylor I still think I will keep my Seagull. My only complaint is that the neck is rather wide. It doesn't bother me, except that my beater (which is the guitar I practice on most of the time) has a thinner neck, more like a Taylor. When I have switch guitars it takes a little getting used to, but it's not too bad.

Mine should be from 2005, so it's a pretty 'young' guitar. It has a few dings, but the previous owner installed a see-through pickguard (i'm not into that too much, maybe i'll remove it)
It doesn't have a pickup, i'm not playing live anyways - no band, no gigs. No driving licence, no band. As easy as it can get ;)
Also, my ability to sing/play simultaneously isn't that good because i'm not singing for that long. So no lonely guitar playing as a depressing/-ed singer/songwriter, covering one Beatles or one Cash song in each show and no talking about the philosophy of love. It takes time to build a voice so that it's strong enough. I'm not even loud enough to compete with my classical guitar when strummed.

with that floor, you should not buy a Mascis JM - you'd never find it again if you'd dropped it on the floor.
BTW - your Seagull is nice too!
