Recommend - An electronic drum kit?

I know, a weird request for a guitar forum, but I'd rather ask everyone here than join some other forum just to ask them.

Recommend a good electronic drum set.

I already have a nice regular drum kit, but I live in an apartment.  My fiancé wants to learn to play drums, and I want to keep up my practice, not to mention I think my daughter might enjoy it when whe's old enough (who wouldn't?).  I am totally out of the loop when I'm buying anything but guitar parts, or tools, so give me your input on brands or features I should be looking for.  Oh, I'm also an a budget.  Figure about $600 max.

The drummer from my old band, who's the best drummer in the history of the universe, has a fairly cheap Roland job which cost him like £800 GBP. He loves it for practising on, although obviously it doesn't have the responsiveness of real heads. Better than a practice pad any day, though.

For reasonable money, yeah. There's an Alesis series, but I've not heard anything about them. The DDrum ones are really nice, apparently, but you're talking like $5000.

Im assuming you want soemthign that sorta simulates the drum layout of an acoustic set...

The Roland HD-1 has only a few sounds (good quality, though) and a mesh head snare drum pad (for more realistic playing feel), but the Yamaha DTXplorer is more versatile - more samples, more edit options etc. I even know some people who use it on stage. They are both the same price here in Germany.
