Jazzmaster AVRI Pickups

Post by spiffy chap » Mon Jan 07, 2008 8:42 pm

Anybody know how to tell the difference between these and CIJ. There is a guy selling a couple pairs for ridiculously cheap and want to make sure I get AVRI. Today I just got a CIJ JM for cheap and want to replace the pickups. Pics coming later, but help with this before tomorrow would be greatly appreciated.

AVRIs have cloth wiring, and beveled pole-pieces.  Also, the pickup is very thin, and the windings are wide.

These are CIJ:

These are AVRI:  Note the beveled pole-pieces.  CIJs are flat on top...(So are vintage)

Thanks!!! So there is going to be an obvious difference in sound? They are $50 and I think this a good replacement, but do you guys have any suggestions?

There's a huge difference in sound.  The CIJ ones are usually microphonic, and sound more like Strat pickups.  The AVRIs sound very good, IMO.  Much more like vintage JMs do.

$50 is a very good deal for AVRIs.  Not so much a good deal for CIJs.  I sold a pair of CIJs on Ebay, and they only fetched $25...With covers!  >:(

If they were Jag pickups, I'd be all over it.  I already have 2 AVRIs and a CIJ with Novaks.

Buy 'em all, and put 'em on Ebay for $100 a pair!  :D

They occasionally sell for that much.  $90 a pair is a fairly common price for a set...  either way, if they're legit AVRI, $50 is a great price.

I tried selling a set here a couple of months ago.  Nobody wanted them, they just wanted to have discussions about them.  I'll re-list them in the For Sale section, but you'll need to hurry up and get to 50 posts to see them!
One more guitar, then I'll practice!
