For guitars of the straight waisted variety (or reverse offset).

Bigsby on a strat.

Post by Loomer » Tue Jan 08, 2008 3:13 pm

Can it be done? Is there something, aside from perhaps good taste, that keeps this config. from being at all popular? I did a search and was unable to find a thread discussing this.

The only thing I can really thing of the strumming-arm contour on the top. Would that get in the way?  I like the idea of trying it on a beat-up mexi strat.

Whatta ya think?

just cuz its unessecary and you have to change the bridge, you could buy a hard tail strat with a set in bridge instead of a floating bridge or change the config but im not really sur ehow easy that would be

Yes, it can be done: about halfway down this link, there is a picture of one of Ry Cooder's bigsby-equipped stratocasters.

Cool looking and, quite likely, cool sounding.

30th St Guitars in NYC once had a Black Strat...the Vibrato routing was filled-in and painted over (sloppily). TOM Bridge and Bigsby added.
Goofiest thing I ever saw...I wish I could have bought it!!

Putting a Bigsby on a strat is like putting a tremolo on a les Paul.
In both cases it would detract from the guitars whose design, IMHO is perfected.
A Bigsby on anything else, is fine to me, but on a strat? Nah!
But of course if that is what you want, you should have it.

I can understand your point of view..
But as someone who doesn't care for strats
I see slapping a bigsby on it makes it a lot better..

Same thing for Tele's and SG's...

How about a Floyd Rose on a Les Paul?

I respect purism, but respectfully disagree. I personally love Bigsbys on Les Pauls. And while I have a special place in my heart for Strats, I don't hold them sacred. I also think the Strat's trem is far from perfect. ...at least on the Mexicans that I buy. Strats are so mass produced, and the MIM's are so cheap and well-built that they kinda beg for modification. (but then again i hear EVERYTHING beg for modding. 8))

I think I've settled on a blue pawnshop gem. Any expert or "weekend expert" advice on how to proceed? Like filling the bridge holes and trem cavity and determining precise placement of the posts for the new bridge? Will a Mustang bridge work, or am I going to have to shop around for something else? etc... I'm a noob, but thorough and meticulous to a fault(read:anal), and excited to get my hands dirty.
