I wonder if it has something to do with Ryan Adams making 1989 into a Smith's album?

She's playing a nice, cool looking guitar. What's the big deal?

But in Indie rock Saudi Arabia, female pop stars aren't allowed 'their' guitar unless they are well covered up and wearing Converse. It depends, perhaps Ryan Adams has given her permission to play a guitar that's made in it's thousands and is close to everywhere, since it's highly unlikely she'd ever be able to pick up one herself, since choosing nail polish is, I am reliably informed...exhausting.

Someone needs to raise the Girls With Guitars thread from the dead...not really.

Oh goodness gracious. While "indie rock Saudi Arabia" did make me giggle, I wasn't commenting on her gender. I just can't process the poster child of the teen pop universe playing Johnny Marr's guitar. It'd be like One Direction doing a Mission of Burma cover or something.

BTW, considering how many girls are posted with enthusiasm (and perhaps, admittedly, some creepy over-enthusiasm) in the "pics of pros playing offsets" thread, I don't think it's fair to immediately leap to sexist prejudice as the explanation for a given reaction. If you honestly can't see the difference in perception between someone like Fiest or Karen O and Taylor Swift, then I'm not sure you're the best candidate to psychoanalyze the rest of us.

And now I'm debating on the internet. Lord help me.

There's no difference, it's a mainstream mass produced guitar and it's a signature model for a tried and true heritage rocker and purveyor of fairly conservative (not politically) music. It's not some secret thing you need the Indie rock handshake to get, there's nothing odd or strange about a mainstream pop star playing it, nothing.

You said WHAT THE FUCK, in my obviously awry perception that's usually said in a negative manner.

btw last I checked Karen O was a singer not a guitarist and Fiest did the music for an Apple advert, which hardly makes her Monte Cazazza.

Perhaps I'm tarring you with the brush wielded by the characters who posted about going off for a wank at the sight of the Dum Dum Girls with a few guitars and who wondered who chose their instruments for them (ironic on forum where there's loads of threads asking 'should I buy this?' and 'What guitar should I buy?'). If so I'm sorry but Taylor Swift playing a Fender Jaguar...pfft not remarkable in any way.

Maybe if she was playing a glockenspiel fashioned from the dry bones of Nikki Minaj, I might raise a WTF but not for a common or garden guitar you can go and buy nearly everywhere. I know some people still cling to some idea that an Offest is somehow a marker of a bohemian free thinker but it's not.

Of course you're right in a very literal sense, but I think you're being a little disingenuous if you don't at least see what I mean, whether or not you agree. Guitars are subject to fashion like everything else. I also think it'd be weird to see Eric Clapton playing some Ibanez shred machine, or Dave Mustaine playing an ES-335, or Bruce Springsteen playing anything other than a Tele. We tend to make associations between things, like guitars, and people, and colors, and shapes, and so on. In that sense, I find it jarringly weird to see Taylor Swift playing any Jaguar, let alone one as specific as the Marrguar.

If that kind of "guitar fashion" doesn't matter to you, I totally get it (and in all honesty that probably makes you a bit more mature than me on this subject), but come on--it's unreasonable to act like on OSG of all places, a lot of people don't get pretty caught up in it. Guilty as charged, in my case.
You said WHAT THE FUCK, in my obviously awry perception that's usually said in a negative manner.
Well of course it was negative (albeit tongue-in-cheek). I think Taylor Swift makes silly, calculated music, so seeing her with a guitar that I tend to associate with the opposite of that kinda music is, like I said above, jarring. Call me a snobby musical elitist all you want, but I still have no idea where you got sexism out of that. I find Beyonce every bit as silly. I hope that doesn't also make me racist.
btw last I checked Karen O was a singer not a guitarist.
Jesus Louisus, I'm just making an example of how there are a billion hugely respected female artists out there, and how strange it is for you to ignore that while assuming criticism of Taylor Swift (of all people) on a board like OSG (of all places) is sexist. Let me be more literal: If you can't see the difference in perception between [well-known guitarist and award-winning songwriter] St. Vincent and someone like Taylor swift, yadda yadda yadda.
That's exactly why I'm so bothered. I think Dum Dum Girls are awesome (and they would have been a better example in my previous post), I love the fact that they rock a set of matching white Fender offsets, and think people who post condescending, sexist shit like that are knuckle-dragging assholes. The sheer ubiquity of sexually frustrated mysogynists on the internet makes me crazy, but I'm also bugged (admittedly to a lesser extent) when criticism of a woman is instantly classified as sexist just because she's a woman. And at the risk of sounding pedantic, let's be fair--that's its own kind of sexism, well-intentioned or not.
If so I'm sorry but Taylor Swift playing a Fender Jaguar...pfft not remarkable in any way.
This is the part I just can't figure out. I'm not denying that getting hung up on guitar fashion is silly. But most of the things we waste our time with on the internet are silly. On a forum that's all about the recreational, obsessive dissection of a particular style of guitars, are you really telling me you're shocked by all this?
I know some people still cling to some idea that an Offest is somehow a marker of a bohemian free thinker but it's not.
A) I'm one of those people, although...
B) Of course I know you're right, however...
C) I continue to cling to that belief because it's fun.

So we agree and disagree at the same time. All I'm saying is, leave some room for nuance*, try not to assume prejudice when it's not overt, and don't be shocked when the world's biggest pop star has a polarizing affect on musicians on the internet. It happens.

*I fully acknowledge the absurd irony of a call for nuance coming from the guy who originally summed up his feelings with "WHAT THE FUCK"

If I owned a Johnny Marr Jaguar, and I was selling it on eBay, I wouldn't put a picture of Johnny Marr playing it in the description. I would put that picture in the description.

She may be the most popular entertainer alive. Her fans tend to follow her closely. If a young fan likes her guitar, and wants to be like her, that model will probably start selling even better.

Not every comment is clever, or sarcastic, or ironic. Sometimes things are just like they are said....

amv, fair enough you weren't being sexist.

But...and bear with me since I'm on phone and not quoting.

I don't really care for the 'calculated music' of Taylor Swift either but you can't throw that in a Johnny Marr thread when nothing is more calculated than playing Smith's song's to ensure he fills a venue.

I must admit I struggled to read on past the words Clapton and Mustaine but I pulled on my stoutest walking boots and pressed on regardless of the rocky terrain.

I must strongly refute any suggestion that I am mature, I'm not mature I just dont care what guitar anyone plays, only what they play on it. I've seen more photos of Taylor Swift playing guitar than I've heard Taylor Swift songs and for me a jaguar is just a guitar. I also don't recognise any of the hardy old indie rock rubrics of cool, I'm from the peat layer below all that rhubarb.

To be honest I'd probably prefer my kids were pestering me to see Taylor Swift than if they were pestering me to go and see some bloke do the songs of his old band in a voice flatter than tabletop mountain or worse still some 'calculated' MTV alternative week band reboot.

Goes off to hope Taylor Swift has a song in the new Star Wars film, loves MBV, get's Nels Cline as her guitarist, plays Kurt Cobain in the biopic, becomes the face of Converse, collects VW campers, replaces Kim Gordon in the reformed Sonic Youth and gets her own range of offsets.

If Keds aren't cool anymore, I must have missed the memo .

I also wanted to point out that the guitarist for Charli XCX, another uncool mainstream pop singer, plays a Squier JMJM. On the other hand, neither of what I said actually have anything to do with Johnny Marr's Jaguar.

Maybe we can all agree that cool is what you make of it, and with more and more affordable Offset models coming out, more people are picking them up and it's not exactly a bad thing for the cool kids. Or just go play a Teisco or something .
