"it's got a neck like a spanish guitar finished in barb wire."
sounds like a good guitar for a beginner.. that'll work up those finger callouses..
(my first guitar was a cheese grater across my fingers, looking back it was a godsend)

Re: A WARNING TO GIBSON LOVERS
i've played a lot of faded SGs over the past month or so, and i have to say i really love the necks on them. i'm on the lookout for a good deal on a brown one, or maybe a 3 pickup white one.
Re: A WARNING TO GIBSON LOVERS
I can't recommend the brown SGs highly enough, Jonas. I love mine.

Re: A WARNING TO GIBSON LOVERS
I agree with everything Idiotbear said too - I have one of the non-faded SG specials because I preferred the gloss finish, but you're being ridiculous if you think it's actually painful! Why not just give the neck a good polishing?
The Special is a great guitar - pretty similar specs to the Standard but for a lot less money. I also prefer the look - it's a bit more "rough and ready", plus they can really take a beating...

Re: A WARNING TO GIBSON LOVERS
I love my SG Classic. Not quite the same but still fairly low budget. It was $749 on sale at MF IIRC. I did spend a few hours scraping excess glue from the frets off of the fingerboard with an x-acto this weekend though. There were a few errant fret file marks which I smoothed out the best I could and the board was incredibly dull/rough too so I went at with some 0000 steel wool. The workmanship wasn't that great really but it's looking pretty good now. I've got an SG with a one piece body and neck that sounds great and looks pretty good for well under $1k. What's not to love?
If you can't play it as is and you can't really sell it, you don't have anything to lose: Roll up your sleeves and finish what Gibson didn't get paid to do.

Re: A WARNING TO GIBSON LOVERS
I have played several faded series guitars and wouldn't have any problems buying any of them. The brown SG has been in my head for awhile, however SG's are just a bit too small body-wise for me. At least Gibson is trying to put some USA made guitars out at affordable prices, something Fender seems to be forgetting. I have really been eyeing a 2 pickup Melody Maker, hard to believe that a new Gibson can be had for $400 and Fender's cheapest US guitar is a highway one at $750.

Re: A WARNING TO GIBSON LOVERS
i've got an sg special but the wine red one , and for me it works cool , i find the neck quite playable , it may be is cauze i've got really fat hands , i find the quality of my gibson way higher than my american tele , in terms of finish and hardware , they both had something in comon they were both poorly adjusted , but thats a blame on the store i think
i saw the faded ones and the finish did look kind of cheap , but the nitro finish in mine looks great i highly recommend it
