Gibson ES Strap buttons....

Post by PorkyPrimeCut » Fri Feb 01, 2008 12:12 pm

My ES-125T has just the one strap button at the back. I have to attach the front of the strap to the neck, rather like a classical acoustic.

So, I began to attach the strap to the button at the back & it just popped out, very easily too!!

It looks kinda like the peg / teeth that're used to secure strings at the bridge on an acoustic guitar. I'm totally confused. There's no thread or grooves so it doesn't stay in when the straps attached & I can't work out any other way of securing the strap.

Do I have to buy a different strap button??

I'll post a picture when my camera's charged enough.....

EDIT....

Voila!!

Put a Grolsch washer on it and shove it back in there! ;)

Wood glue (or Gorilla glue if you're crazy) will reattach one of those permanently if it's really tight in the hole, but if not you're gonna have to find a bigger one or fill it somehow.

It's tapered, and the hole it came out of should also be tapered.  Or at least it probably started that way.

You could glue it back in, but you'd probably never get it back out again without taking something else with it.

The other options would be to dowel the hole and ream it out to the correct diameter so that the pin fits snugly.  Or you could build up the inside diameter of the hole with thin wood shavings and glue, ream that out, and then re-install the pin.  Or you could find a bigger pin!

Just looking closer at the hole I have to deal with, it appears to be around an inch deep - way deeper than I'd expected.

I may be able to use a metal threaded plug - the ones that then take a threaded screw down their middle. I just didn't want to screw anything directly into the sides of the hole & mush it up.

To be honest the one I pictured above looks like my best shot. Long & thin. I just wish it looked more, I dunno, trustworthy?

I'm gonna hit the hardware shop up the road on Monday morning & see whats available.
