Weird. It makes me wonder what #s 1-73 looked like. This, for me, brings up the question of what models were used in the first Yamaha numbering scheme and whether they did serial numbers by model. The body and neck look right. The guard, bridge, and trem are unfortunate enough to look suspect, though I don't see any extra pickguard holes around the bridge, and that looks like some sort of hand spring tension adjustment, which is kind of cool. I'd be interested to know more about the pickups and to see a shot of the guts. The knobs look like the nice metal ones used on the SA-5 hollowbody.

@gavanti I have a picture of a prototype sg2 from a Japanese guitar book - I recall it looked somewhat similar.
I'll see if I can find the book/picture.

Whoa! Those are really interesting. Thanks for sharing, They look a lot more together aesthetically than the one that was for sale. The small shift in the pickguard shape and pickups covers help. I kind of dig the short horn on the white SG prototype too.

Ahh I was wondering about that SG, I have been following this auction closely because first I thought it was rebuild SG-3 so I wanted to take the neck off and put it on my SG-2 body. But after a while I thought about that SG prototype that Yamaha has on their history website. The pickups look the same and the fact that this SG-3 has the same knobs as my SG-2A and the tremolo looks like a purposely build item it seems that there was more up to this guitar then just a "Pawn-shop" mod.

Does anyone know if the serial numbers for the bass models are part of the run of numbers for all the models or do they have a separate series of numbers ?

Awesome, that SG-2 looks just like Stu's from King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard.
