Re: Paul Westerberg First Act Guitar!

For guitars of the straight waisted variety (or reverse offset).

Well, after playing it for a while I have decided that's it's just an OK guitar. It sounds GREAT (seriously), but it's a pain to play standing up because of the neck imbalance. Sitting down it's fine, seems like they designed the bottom horn so the guitar rests a little offset on your leg to fix the weight imbalance while sitting down? Why? It looks cool and it's cheap as hell but for the money I would go with the Squire 51. My uncle bought one and brought it over and the neck on it is sweet as hell. It's ugly, but it plays and feels great.
The Westerberg sounds great plugged straight into my little Gibson tube amp, really great rock tone. I will probably use it for recording, but I can't see going through another long rehearsal or even a show with this.
Why should we buy postage stamps? We can make our own.

Thanks. I have been playing it more lately as a slide guitar. The pickup sounds really awesome through a little overdriven tube amp. Wrote the company and asked if I could buy another but they wouldn't sell me one.

GAK!!!

(Seriously?)
To be fair, the Replacements are not that well known in the UK, and Chris would've been like 2 years old when they were active.  :D

hehe, cheers for bailing me out on that one, Rob!!!

May I also add that Kurt Ballou is one savage guitarist, and that first act of his looks awesome. Doesn't he usually play Rickenbackers with EMG's in them?

I have a special relation to Mr Westerberg. My wife and I played the "Stereo" album during the birth of our firstborn. I can't say if it's a good or a bad record - I love it anyway, because I get that strange feeling of complete happiness everytime I put it on!

...Both my kids love that record too nowadays -  "Mr Rabbit - Mr Rabbit - Your ears are mighty long...."  ;D
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

I was going to say that I think "Come Feel Me Tremble" is my favorite album from him simply because I can't get enough of Crackle and Drag, or Knockin' Em Back. Then I thought about how bad ass "Folker" is and "Stereo" and I think I like everything equally starting at Suicaine Gratification on. There are at least 3-5 songs off of each album that I can't get enough of.

Kurt hasnt played Rickenbackers in a long time. To tell you the truth he wasnt even going to use rickenbackers he wanted a SG but found it to neck heavy. Now his live lineup as Ive seen it back in 2007 is his First act with an EMG and a Jazzmaster gold top from warmoth with EMG and his "FrankenTele which is a telecaster from warmoth with a bigsby tailpeice with an EMG.

Yeah he is a brutal guitarist the music sound chaotic but his guitar playing is anything but.

Sounds like EMG are the pickups to get.

Yeah, he's a phenomenal player, and his guitar sound is great.

I don't really like EMG's all that much - they sound great with distortion but I've always found the clean tone to be really lacking...

[edit] I posted inside the quote. whoops!
