Fender Jaguar HH Tremolo

Post by pepilocura » Fri Feb 15, 2008 8:30 am

Hi!
I just bought a new Fender Jaguar HH and it sounds great for me.
The thing is that I NEED the tremolo, so I was looking for information in order to replace the tailpiece.
But there are two problems: THE HOLES of the tailpiece.
I don´t know if the new tailpiece will cover those holes or not.
Has anyone done this?
Please, I need help and I NEED the trem.

Hmmmm . . . going from Stop tailpiece to trem is going to be a big project. If you want to put a Jag/Jazz trem in there, you're definitely going to have to rout, and the new trem may not cover the holes. However, I think you could do one of these:

Again though, it may not cover the holes.

You could always try the Stetsbar tremolo (www.stetsbar.com). It's on the expensive side, though, at $300+.  :o

Edit: It looks like it probably won't fit because of the output jack/knob plate and pickguard. Nevermind.  :(

Thanks for the suggestions. The thing is that I wanted to leave the guitar as original as possible.
I´m still waiting for suggestions though.

Bigsby is probably the best solution sound-wise, but all Bigsbys require extra screw holes. The Bigsby B-5 is the one for flat top solid body guitars with Gibson-style bridge and tailpiece... like the Jaguar HH model: http://www.bigsbyguitars.com/products_b5.html

If you want to avoid modifications, the Les-trem flatfiver mentioned is the only option I know of.

I have a Jaguar Special (the same design as an HH but with different finish) and it's next to me as I type, and the Stetsbar model pictured in the link below will fit a Jag HH (with the scratchplate around the bridge cut away). You wouldn't need to modify the control plate, there's enough room with that model.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Stet ... rebird.jpg

However, the tailpiece studs are a lot further back on the Jag HH than they are on Gibson-style guitars, which could be a problem. So maybe it won't fit after all. Tailpiece aside, you'd need to cut away the scratchplate around the bridge, or buy a replacement scratchplate and cut that.

You can get a closer look at that model here: http://www.shop.stetsbar.com/product.sc ... oductId=18 - which to me seems to indicate that the tailpiece position could be an impossible problem. Even if there's some wriggle-room, there may not be enough. And, well, $339 is a lot of money to spend on something that might fit.

To me a better option would be to sell the HH and get a regular Jag and install single-coil sized 'buckers - there are plenty that will fit, and there are some really great sounding ones out there. If you totally love the HH and don't want to part with it, it's the Les-trem or modifications + expense.

FYI, I have an F logo Bigsby and have tried but it will NOT fit cleanly on my Jag Baritone, namely covering up the stop post holes. That means it wouldn't work on any stop post Jag - HH, HH Bari, etc.  Could be done but it would look like a hack job.

My F logo Bigsby will await another project that I have in mind.

Since pepilocura wants to to leave the guitar as original as possible, and Bigsbys require extra screw holes, it's not really an issue anyway.

If you're going to go Les Trem, you might wanna jump on one fairly quickly. According to Joe Naylor at Reverend, the founder of EBM, the company that manufactures the Les Trem, died recently and the company might be going out of business. (Supposedly the company has been sold and production might ramp back up sometime in March, but who knows?)

and if you put a standard jag/jazz trem tailpiece closer to the bridge, like on the MIM jag/jazz ?
the plate will hide the holes, no ?
