Mine came with a really crap setup and way-light strings too, but a couple of minutes of work sorted it out, just like yours.

Now it has 11s on it, and I'm in the process of swapping the pups. I fucked up though - I bought the pickups ages ago and meant to get a bridge '59 and a neck Phat Cat. Guess who got them mixed up? So now I'm going to have the P-90 at the bridge. Do you think that will sound OK?

Very cool. The fretwire looks the same as what's on my Classic and Deluxe. Not very Gibson-like but great for those used to Fenders. What kind of P90s are you thinking of using? I kind of want to give a pair of Curtis N.'s a try.

i think that'll work, if you don't mind a mellower neck pickup. a p90 is louder than a '59 so they should balance really well volume wise.

i was really impressed with the GFS '59 humbucker i put in my black jazzmaster, so i went ahead with their P90s. i know they might not be the best option out there, but if they turn out to be crap it's not like i wasted a lot of money.

Yea... looks really nice!
I noticed the orange peel on the headstock before I read the text. My first thought was "uh-oh... someone's been tampering with this one". I've never actually examined one of these up close, but admired them hanging on the wall at GC and SA.
So... are you going for the P-90s and Pelham Blue?

sounds great!
there's only three valid excuses to be late for work:
1. morning trafic
2. morning guitar jam
3. morning sex

i have a 67 SG EB3- it was badly butchered i nthe 70's. i considered doign pelham blue to cover the body work---
but i veneered the face and back with mahogany veneer- and i am happy- the wood is so nice!
you're really going to paint it? the mahogany on this guitar looks very nice!

I'm glad you're going with P90s and not with the MM small single coils, though admittedly I don't know those PUs well enough to make an informed comment based on anything besides looks. I think it will look great in pelham blue or brown, though I wonder...in case you leave it brown, will you put a glossier finish over this one, or leave it as is? And how are you going to deal with the stop bar holes when you put on the vibrola?

the first thing i'm gonna do with the finish is buff it out, and then if i'm not happy with that i might shoot a few coats of clear, unless i decide to go with pelham blue that is. i'll probably plug the holes for the stop bar, although they would only be partly visible under the long vibrola cover.

I used to have one of the faded SGs in cherry. After playing it for a number of months the back of the neck got a lot glossier than the rest of the body. I bet if you buff the body you'll get a nice semi-gloss finish. I'm interested to see how it turns out. I've been listening to Live at Leeds lately and damn do I want another SG!
