Good amplifiers for combo organs?

Post by stevejamsecono » Fri Feb 22, 2008 11:29 am

Appealing to the organ maestros on the board for this one (paging Orang Goreng.... paging Orang Goreng...)
Just got myself a lovely Yamaha YC-10 organ, and would like to know what kind of amp I should run it through for the best sound.
So far, I've run it through my 70s Bassman with 2x15 cab, and it sounded pretty monsterous (the bass notes especially sounded very nice), but would prefer to keep that for my guitar stuff, and possibly use something else.
At the moment I'm running it through an old Kustom Bass amp which is doing the job, but not amazingly.

Suggestions?

-Steve

Well, I only have one amp, and to be honest I like it a lot more with an organ than with my jazzmaster (even though I really like it with the JM as well, though there's perhaps a bit too much treble). It's 100 W master volume silverface Vibrosonic Reverb, basically a twin with a 15". Playing with a combo organ, a volume pedal, and the distorted channel of that amp is more fun than is good for one person :).

I'm really curious if that blackface custom twin is anything like it. It probably won't distort as much as my amp due to no master volume circuit, but it may be worth a try!

isn't a twin reverb a good choice for rhodes pianos? in this case, it can't be too bad for organ! (the organ sounds specs are a little bit similar to rhodes sound specs: strong mids and maybe a little bit of distortion)

Yeah, definitely. A few people on the combo organ mailing list used Marshall half-stacks, and apparently that sounds really good as well. I wonder... Vox made some of the most famous combo organs (wasn't a lot of the American-made Vox stuff produced by Thomas Organs?)... I wonder which amps they marketed to go with the Continental and the Jaguar. AC-30s? The organs came out in '64 or '65 IIRC...maybe someone with knowledge of Vox amp timelines may weigh in...

aw man, that'd be droolworthy.

So far, the Organ seems to like my Bassman. 15"s suit it well.

In my band, our keyboard player runs both a Vox Continental and Nord electric piano though a 67 Twin Reverb head / 2 x 15" bottom.  Speakers are Weber Neos.  Sounds great and LOUD.

I was actually watching a clip of Meshugga Beach Party last night with my roomate, sounds pretty damn good, keep it up!

I just ran my YC-20 through a DI box into the mixer at shows.. The girl who played it, would use a small practice amp as her monitor off the DI

Hey, another YC-20!  Electones are way cool - heavy as all get out though.  Wish I had kept my old Farfisa, but the YC-20 is a fine substitute.

PS, Steve, glad you like MBP!
