NGD: 1966 Jag Refin
This post has been a long time coming, just finally got my hands on this one after 6 months or so.
Nabbed it for $1950, needs work but I’m stoked on it.
Here are some photos - I don't want to swamp the thread with too much, so I'll post 2 links to all the detail shots so you guys can see what all is going on, those can be found here -> https://imgur.com/a/NfW5fC3 https://imgur.com/a/nExupeM
So this thing has been floating around for 6 months in the guitar center circuit, listed as a ‘66 refin. I first saw it on the GC site for $2k back in July and ended up putting it on layaway. I cancelled the layaway and it ended up selling soon after. Turns out it was bought and returned like 6 times over the past couple months. I’m assuming people were buying sight unseen and didn’t realize the decal was gone, gnarly route in the bridge and the refin was pretty bad. Whoever had it last had it one day past the return period and had to sell back to GC. They bought it back in and tagged it at $1799. I saw it pop up and immediately got it on layaway earlier this month and sold my AV65 to help fund it.
L series plate, and supposedly all original hardware/pickups/wiring. The pickguard has “AV” written in pen on the back - I’m assuming this means it’s a reissue guard. It’s sort of warped a bit, and the middle stripe that isn’t aged is sort of weird.
I think the neck is over sprayed - I see parts that have checking but it looks like it’s under another layer of clear. The worn in parts are sort of rough feeling. The body itself looks like it could be nitro, but doesn’t have a clear coat? Lots of orange peel looking spots. The chipped spots make it look like it’s poly though. There are 3 layers of paint under the pickguard - blue, then gold, then red, then what looks like charcoal frost?
I’m not sure if there’s any way to determine which was the original color in this state, but I’m considering sending it off to Danocaster for a proper refin so really anything is game. It’s pretty cool in its current state though and honestly the neck feels pretty good as it is!
Check out the linked albums, and let me know if anything seems off! Also would love any suggestions on how to determine what the finish actually is. Cheers!

Sexy. LPB is one of the best Jaguar colours. I know I say the same thing in nearly every LPB Jag thread, but it's true!

Updated post! Thanks! Not 100% on what the backstory is but it came from the Cherry Hill, NJ guitar center. Supposedly the guy who sold it to them originally had it for years and did the refinish himself, and sold it with a bunch of other guitars.

Re: NGD: 1965 Jag Refin
well whoever refinished it did a sloppy job. still this guitar has lots of character and LPB is my absolute favorite color so I'd play the hell out of it!!
Congrats!!!

Yep, I'd play it, not worrying about dings and such to the finish. It looks great as-is and you can always refinish it properly when you feel like it. Great score!

Holy wow, if that’s CFM you should absolutely see if you can salvage the original finish. Stunning.
Bummer about that route, looks like a screwdriver job.

Re: NGD: 1965 Jag Refin
Thanks everyone! Very stoked on it. Definitely has some mojo.
Check this out though:
and after 5 seconds with a .71 guitar pick
The finish flakes off super easily. It's wild. The specs on the table in the background are the paint chips.
I'm really curious about salvaging what's under if it's original, but I'm worried I'll get to the front and find that it was a terrible refin or something weird under this refin and that's why they covered it up. At the same time I kind of love this shitty refin. So much character to it. But the paint comes off so easy that I think I have to do it and find out what's underneath.
Man, the route job is trash. The wood splinter by the right side of the bridge pickup is especially upsetting. I'm considering taking it to my tech to have him route out that trash job and have him glue in a new piece of alder. Especially if I end up sending it off for a refinish, then it can be finished over. We'll see.garyfanclub wrote: ↑Sun Jan 20, 2019 6:49 amHoly wow, if that’s CFM you should absolutely see if you can salvage the original finish. Stunning.

Definitely looks salvageable (or atleast worth trying) to me - hopefully it's a case of someone just not liking CFM and not a cover-up job. Excited to see some pics! Obligatory post of my favorite jag ever posted here...rbrcbr wrote: ↑Mon Jan 21, 2019 2:54 pmThanks everyone! Very stoked on it. Definitely has some mojo.

If I were you I'd drink a 10 litre bottle of patience & carry on with that guitar pick!!rbrcbr wrote: ↑Mon Jan 21, 2019 2:54 pmThe finish flakes off super easily. It's wild. The specs on the table in the background are the paint chips.

What's the worse that could happen? Like you say, it looks like shit somewhere? Maybe it ended up getting sanded? Who knows?
But, I'd regret sending it off for a refin without at least trying to get it back to CFM. Who knows, the decal may still be under there too.
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

If you picked up a CFM Jag under $2k, I think you’ve pretty much won the whole year. Chip away!

Trying with the patience juice guys, it’s so difficult.
Took it to my tech today to have a look - tried some lacquer thinner on the blue, turns out it’s lacquer. I tried the lacquer thinner over the decal to see if I could spot the decal, no dice though. I started to see some semblance of CFM and decided to stop just in case. Possible it’s another layer though and the decal is under that...
Tried some sanding too on the body and headstock, but it seems like the color is smearing or something...
I think I found my tool though. Got into it with a pallet knife and the blow dryer today, made some crazy progress.
Check it:
Sure looks like CFM to me
Things are looking promising, just lots of dings here and there. Trying really hard to not go through the CFM, the contours are proving fairly difficult though.
Here’s hoping for an intact finish everywhere else!
