I'm keeping my fingers crossed that router templates arrive in the mail tomorrow, so the project is moving along pretty quickly. One of the folks on eBay that sells a full set of Jazzmaster templates agreed to sell me only the templates that I needed, so that was helpful.

Also, I managed to get all of the bushings out of the headstock without chipping up any maple. What works best for me is putting a drill bit that just barely slides into the bushing into the bushing (the smooth end of the drill bit), and then moving the end of the drill bit in little circles while gently pulling upward. It's slow, but helps keep things non-destructive.

I'm planning on using one of these oddball transitional Jazzmaster decals:



...and eventually doing a really aged Lake Placid Blue that has turned into a dark green:

Sorry for the derail, but yeah, you should check out The Venture Bros. The show is amazing in every way. As far as I'm concerned, probably one of the best animated shows ever made.

How do you plan to do the aged Lake Placid? I'm interested in a slightly less aged LCB that retains more blue but curious on how to do it with nitro. Lots of tinted lacquer?

I'm planning on spraying a little test strip to see how many coats of yellow/aged lacquer it takes to go from blue to green. Green is my favorite color, but green guitars are in short supply.

Matching headstock is an interesting idea--it would allow you to reshape the peghead to the "right" shape, too!

I think I'll be sticking with the Coronado headstock shape - it looks like there isn't enough material there for the smaller Jazzmaster shape, and I don't really like the CBS headstocks.

It'll be okay - I kinda like the Coronado shape, and this guitar will be something of a mutant.

Side question to the Jazzmaster experts:
Were there any B+B Jazzmasters made with the smaller headstock, or were those used up in the D+B times?

The router templates arrived in the mail, so I got to get the body closer to being finished. It wasn't exact, but it was close enough - after some minor modifications!

Trimming away more of the scrap with a jigsaw





I got some tearout - I guess my router bit is showing its age. ...time to make another tiny alder patch!





The body was slightly cupped, so sanding with a giant block didn't work too well. I got rid of some of the extra wood in the routs with a Forstner bit.

I trimmed the neck pocket and corner of the pickup rout by hand. It was rewarding to make a nice neck pocket fit!





The tuner screw holes were feeling loose, so I dowelled them so I don't have any issues with screws falling out.





Also, plugged the extra string tree hole with a sidegrain dowel.





Pet peeve: when the truss rod nut is an innie. I made some washers fit the odd size by putting a few washers on a machine screw, clamping them with a nut, and then chucking the screw in a drill and reducing their diameter with a file.





...seeing how many washers I need to add...

I know many think that teardrop guitars are cool, I have personally hated them since seeing my first one at around age 4. The idea of taking a great guitar and mangling it into one of those ugly things makes me despair. And here you are fixing the apocalyptic fuckery that some fur vest wearing apeman hippie got up to decades ago, and going to some lengths to do so. You have my respect and my enthusiasm!

I am eager to see this poor beshitted thing restored to its proper form and glory.
