I think if you continue sanding, WET sanding mind you, from 600-1500, I think that white mess will fade, and you could apply a tinted nitro overtop and make it virtually disappear.
Well...I don't think so ! It might not be obvious on the pics, but the white mess is UNDER the thin brown layer.
I don't know what to do. I'll certainly do nothing ! Within a little time the white naked part is gonna take some wear, dirt and maybe blood, I think it will tend to egalize the whole thing. And then well I might eventually vernish it !  8)

EDIT: It's not scuffed poly now that I look again.
It looks like the "white" is the bare, non-suntanned maple showing through. By continuing to sand gently, you ease the transition between the tinted lacquer that is on there, and the bare wood. Then you can do a tinted lacquer overtop again, and it *should* even it out some what.

I think "the white mess" is just sand-through the yellow tint that is on MIJ/CIJ necks and the bare unstained wood showing.
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

Doesn't the straight fretboard line on the headstock give some estimation of the year? Didn't some of the early logos go on the wood and then nitro layered over them eliminating the decal edge while some were put on the nitro with one coat over to protect it?

Oops, duh.  I somehow missed the part where he said this was an MIJ.  I thought he was refinishing a vintage JM.

curently I'm changing the pickups on a friend's CIJ CAR JM,
and I notice around the pickguard screw holes some blue paint under the CAR
the body is in mint condition, it hasn't other chip that could show this blue paint elsewhere.
perhaps it's common on CIJ to have different paint layers...

i tried to take pics, but here I only have my phone, and it's too blury  ???
