Fender Telecaster Deluxe vs '72 Thinline

Post by fightoffyourdemons » Thu Mar 20, 2008 1:21 am

I'm close to pulling the trigger on a Telecaster Deluxe, absolutely love them. However I was wondering if there substantial differences in tone between the Deluxe and the Telecaster '72 Thinline?

I had a Thinline about 5 years ago, have regretted selling it ever since. Its probably the best guitar I ever owned. Get one, don't bother with the Deluxe everyman & has dog has got one at the moment. If you do decide to go for one change to pots to 1K.

Hey, another Brand New fan  :)

I'd suggest you go and try them out. Finding a Deluxe or a Thin line in a guitar store isn't that difficult.

apart from the sound, the necks are a bit different too. the deluxe has 12" radius fretboard + medium jumbo frets, and the thinline has 7.25" radius + vintage frets and is a bit chunkier overall IIRC.

I just pulled the trigga on a Deluxe.  I was thinking about a Thinline, too, but the Deluxe won out.  Although I usually prefer the 7.25" radii, the necks on the Deluxes are really nice.

And if "everyone and their brother" has one, you can say the same for the Jazzmaster lately.  All of a sudden, it's popular to own a JM now too. It'll pass, trust me. ;)

i think the tele deluxe and custom hype has gone down a bit lately. at least in sweden they were everywhere in the mid-late 90s, all the cool indie/hardcore/punk bands from up north played them (popsicle, starmarket, fireside, randy, stickboy, kevlar etc.).  seems like offsets are bigger at the moment.

I really really really like the ash bodies on the Thinlines, but I like the overall look (big Strat headstock, bullet truss rod, big pickguard) and 2xVol/2xTone setup on the Deluxes.  The last pair I played the Thinline had much more character to it, whereas the Deluxe sounded a little bland.

I've been thinking about getting an ash body made with Thinline chambers but Deluxe control routing and neck pocket (maybe skipping the f-hole since the Deluxe pickguard would partially cover it, although I love the Fender-style f-holes).  Then I can buy a Deluxe RI, swap out the bodies, and sell the original one.  Or maybe I'll just get a Thinline. ::)
