Re: Gassing For A Classic Fender Type Amp
So we lost a page and a couple posts. I don't remember exactly what was said by everyone (was about to respond tonight ). It seems that everyone is in concurrence that the 12" speaker isn't necessary, but I guess my question is if it sound bad enough to pursue a 10" speaker. The Fender '65 PRRI Tweed FSR is the specific model I'm interested in mostly because I like the aesthetics of the tweed better than the standard Fender black tolex/gray grille, and this model ONLY comes with a 12" speaker. That's not my modification, that's from Fender.
I did really enjoy the sound of the standard '65 PRRI I played the other day, but if I get this one for the cosmetics, then it'll have a 12" speaker. I have no problem trying out new speakers if I don't like the speaker it comes with, but I'm wondering if I should look into a new baffle for a 10", or is the difference between the 10" and the 12" close enough to not make that big of an issue?

The 12" might make it sound more like my amp.

Re: Gassing For A Classic Fender Type Amp
The Tweed FSR comes with a Celestion 12" spkr.. I think it's Fenders attempt to make it sound more like a Vox. You may like that sound. If not you can return it & get the Stock 65 PRRI...
But, If you want to keep the Tweed & make it sound as good as a Stock 65 PRRI you can buy the Stock 10" spkr... You'll probably need a 10" Baffle too. The question you gotta ask yourself is, Is the Tweed worth the extra money just for the aesthetics?
They also make a FSR Blonde with a Jensen 12" spkr that probably sounds more like a Fender...
Good luck!

Your Secret Agent uses a 12" speaker?
I got a call yesterday that they can't get the tweed. So, I might see if they can get the blonde (I was actually already thinking about it). I do like that it's a Jensen a little better than a Celestion, just based on everything I've ever read about Princetons and a vintage-accurate speaker.Larsongs wrote: ↑Tue Oct 20, 2020 8:56 amThe Tweed FSR comes with a Celestion 12" spkr.. Yeah, that one looks VERY classy. I don't know if the red is quite my style, but I'm tempted to look into it.

Re: Gassing For A Classic Fender Type Amp
Nothing wrong with 10" speakers.
My take, and others may disagree, is that in a band mix, there's really nothing that a 12" speaker adds that you wouldn't be likely to EQ out later. That said, size adds smoothness IME. Guitars through 15" speakers sound great.
For playing alone, 12" may sound better than 10", or not. Depends on you.

Re: Gassing For A Classic Fender Type Amp
Interesting.
If it's just an EQ thing, I agree that that would be easy to dial out if that's all there is.mackerelmint wrote: ↑Wed Oct 21, 2020 12:58 pmNothing wrong with 10" speakers.

Well, the salesman I was talking to at Cream City Music called me back yesterday, but I was sleeping. I was feeling like crap today, went to bed early, and couldn't sleep after 1530, so I called him back. They couldn't get the tweed FSR, so we started talking. He made me an offer of $100 off a standard, so I accepted. I went to pick it up, and it was $900 before taxes. I tried it at the shop just to make sure everything works ok. Brought it home, and will put it through its paces properly tomorrow after work. I really liked the idea of a custom finished cabinet, but $200-$250 less for an amp that I DID love is just fine too I'll get some pictures of the setup tomorrow after I attempt a 3-amp wet-dry-wet rig for the hell of it

Re: Gassing For A Classic Fender Type Amp
I'm in early days with it, but so far I agree. I put a ton of pedals through it and everything sounded fantastic. Really loving it so far!!

Re: Gassing For A Classic Fender Type Amp
congrats. the prri are nice. I WOULD like to hear the tweed one you wanted with the 12" despite my need for 10" or 15" speakers exclusively. I built my own 6g2 brown princeton. I do like the princeton reverbs, but there's something extra magical about the Princeton, ESPECIALLY the bias vary tremolo. Much nicer than opto.
I use a fender reverb unit I built if I need spring reverb, or a digital pedal for halls and plates. blackface reverb doesn't wow me like ampeg's v series reverbs.

Re: Gassing For A Classic Fender Type Amp
Agreed. I'd still love to try the tweed one, and compare it to standard too.
