Re: Duplicolor Thread
I tried to finish a body in duplicolor "patriot blue metallic", and I put a few coats of nitro clear on top. For some reason, the finish never hardened. I could scratch it with my fingernail months later. I"m pretty sure this was acrylic lacquer I bought. Not sure what went wrong with it. IT's a bummer because I really liked the color.

Re: Duplicolor Thread
Does anyone know where you can find just a straight up color chart for the perfect match series? Duplicolor's own website is surprisingly unhelpful. I can find plenty of online listings that have a picture of the can with its matching cap, and there's threads like these where can see this or that color, but I'm for a break down of all of the available colors (if it's out there).
I've got a VMJM that's gonna be blue...or green....or gray.

If it wasn't for disappointment, I wouldn't have any appointments.

Re: Duplicolor Thread
Seems like duplicolor's color availability varies greatly between stores and what they produce at a specific time.

Yeah, I'm getting that sense. I'm going to be boring and get something similar to LPB, but having a smattering of random car colors available is really interesting and tempting. I kinda thought about taking the mint guard I bought out on the street, holding it up to random cars to see how it looks, then googling that car's color!
Also, I've seen some varying answers to this, but what's a good clear coat to go over top of this stuff. It says it's acrylic. I'm assuming either acrylic or poly would be ok. I've seen some use nitro or shellac, but I'm not sure I'm in for the long paint drying time before and the long curing time after. This is more a fun project for a beater than something I want look perfect.

Best color for anything ever bar none.

As far as top coat, just be careful because the solvents in the top coat can really mess up the color coats, so make sure you're getting stuff that works well together.

Re: Duplicolor Thread
I've never been able to find any color charts. If you're looking for a LPB lookalike though, you want Bahama Blue. I used that on the headstock below to match a vintage Fernandes body.seenoevil II wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 5:48 pmYeah, I'm getting that sense. Re: Duplicolor Thread
I picked out a color. Its LPB-esque, but a touch greener like an old yellowed finish. I'll reveal that after I do the job. As for clear, I just got perfect match clear coat. I'm not after the nitro experience right now. I assume PM clear will work well with PM paint.
BTW That Wedgewood might be my new favorite color.
Edited to make sense.

Re: Duplicolor Thread
Never managed to get good results with nitro over Duplicolor spray paint. Either will stay gooey all the time or paint will get "wrinkles" and bubbles...schoolie wrote: ↑Thu Dec 17, 2020 11:18 amI tried to finish a body in duplicolor "patriot blue metallic", and I put a few coats of nitro clear on top. I found that any decent 2k acrylic finish will work fine; as long as you use acetone as solvent.
And you spray your coats lightly.

Re: Duplicolor Thread
Well, now I'm 100 times more impressed by all of these beautiful paint jobs, as mine has come out looking like absolute shit. Not even going to put clear coat on it. It's a beat to death VMJM- that'll just be its vibe.
