Vox / 335 Pickguard question.....

Post by PorkyPrimeCut » Mon Apr 14, 2008 7:14 am

My new Vox Ultrasonic had a pickguard which was pretty warped. It was virtually curled up at a right-angle. It was in a pretty poor state, the surface was all bubbled up & to make matters as bad as they could get I snapped it in two trying to use the hot water method to flatten it. Ah well, no love lost really.

I've been looking at pickguard manufacturers & it appears to be very similar to the 335 guard. I drew up a blank that matches the Vox guard....

The 5cm gap is the most important part. The Vox pickups with plastic surrounds could well be larger (or smaller) than the 335 ones. The gap between pickups is also 5cm.

Can someone who owns a 335 with a pickguard measure this distance for me?

Also, can anyone suggest a good place to get dark red/brown translucent guard material? Deep red would probably be fine, even black. Just so long as its translucent. The original was actually a kind of tortoise-shell only translucent - a completely different look to the material being discussed on the "best Tort" thread.

I don't know if the 65 guard I just fucked up is nitro or not. I just want something close really.

This is the kind of tort I'd be after. I know its the wrong shape & has a stupid symbol on it...... http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-PEARL-INLAY-PIC ... dZViewItem

No one biting? I'll try again. Can anyone with a Gibson 335 tell me the distance a) between the pickups b) the width of the pickups (shortest side).

I got these images through today. Some guy in the US is selling them but they're way too expensive. I might make a template from the photos though...

Vox Ultrasonic Pickguard.

If I can't find decent tort-like material I may go with this instead....

From Terrapin.

....alternatively, is anyone up for cutting the guard for me?? I have few tools & no cutting skills at all. I'd make the template, buy the material & send it over, paying for everything of course.  :)

Send a PM to theworkoffire - he did a great job with my custom guard.

:)
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

I thought about that but I don't want to interrupt the flow of his Marauder project.
