Wine red Les Paul Studio

Post by 1946dodge » Sat May 03, 2008 11:35 pm

A guy I work with has been coming into GC where I go every Saturday for a couple of weeks now.
He has a strat and is looking for something with a deeper tone, so he has been looking at some PRS SE Korean made guitars, some Epiphone semi hollow bodys and Schecters.
He wanted to spend about 500-600 bucks.
So I am in there and see this USA made Les Paul Studio, 2003 model used, and it is mint and sweet.
I showed it to him and he wants it.
They are asking 899 for it, and the new ones are 1300.
Do you think this is a good deal?
He wanted to spend only 600 max but is now thinking of spending a little more for the les paul. It comes with the case too.
It looks as if it was very well taken care of too and plays great.

I'd bargain them down to atleast $799. It's a great guitar though, I'd bite if they didn't lower it. I have one and it'll never leave my arsenal!

Thanks.  I agree that  799 would be a good deal and from its mint condition, 899 is probably fine too. Of course it always pays to negotiate if you can,as you say.

I am so so about Les Pauls, I only have a cheap copy, but this guy was going to get a Korean PRS SE which is a great guitar, but he lit right up when I showed him the Les Paul.
I think the Les Paul would hold its value much better too, and he did like how it played and sounded.
Damnn thing is very heavy.

I recently bought a LP Studio (Alpine White). I would recommend it. It's a great guitar for the price. I don't like Gibsons as much as i like Fenders but the Les Paul Studio is really a nice guitar.

Someone in the GC told me that some of the newer Les Pauls have chambered bodies to reduce the weight. The GC guy doesnt like that.
Have you guys heard this?

That's true, I don't know exactly when it started maybe 2008? Within the last year or two for sure. They sure feel better.

The Wine Red Studios are sweet. I briefly had one with gold hardware before deciding to keep my SG which I'd temporarily exchanged for it. One of the classiest LPs out there, I'd say. I don't know about the price. In great shape and with a case $800-850 isn't too bad. I occasionally see some of the older, more worn early-mid 90s ones still going for under $700 on places like Craigslist.

Chambered - Translation:  stupid holes routed in the body to make heavy LP lighter.

Light mahogany isn't as easy to get as it once was. They've been swiss cheesing LPs for a long time. If you want a reasonably light one that is solid, pay the Custom Shop's prices.

I trust the word of the owners of my local little guitar shops over that of any Guitar Center employee, and they all advise me that the chambers are a good thing. It's not just to reduce the weight, it also has to do with simulating the sound of the choice tonewoods used in the '50s and '60s. They also advise me that the chambers (and other modern improvements including the new Burstbucker pickups) were put in practice based on feedback from people who make a living playing their guitars, and that most of the people who turn up their noses at such things tend to be collector assholes who know next to nothing about how to play their "investments." So the question you have to ask yourself is: are you in the business of collecting or are you in the business of rocking?

They don't simply swiss cheese route them anymore. Now it's pretty much like one big hole following the outline of the guitar, leaving it practically hollow. These are much lighter than the earlier swiss cheese type of "chambering". I've read about guys hearing wood chips rattling around in the these newer ones. That wouldn't surprise me, but of the one's I've played, I liked the weight a lot, one of the Faded Mahogany LPs I picked up was almost as light as some of the SG Standards in the store. I didn't plug any in. I'm not really big on the "LP tone" and would be open to hearing what the hollowing out does for the sound, but this is a big point of contention with people who like traditional LPs.

They are hella light now, much more pleasurable to play I think and you still get that lovely thick tone. I was giving a Wine Red one a test drive through some Marshalls and a Deluxe Reverb RI on Saturday and was really getting a kick out of it. The fret access near the 22nd is a little tough, but I think I'd get used to it.
I was pretty set on thinking about putting some money down on one.. and then you know.. the Classic Player Series Jazzmasters came out so that's been put on hold indefinetly... d'oh :)

oh well, my Pete Townshend/Mick Jones fantasies can't be put off forever, so I'll be bound to have both :)
