So today I took my neck PUP out of my Tele (I wanted to get an ohm reading off it) and I magic markered my SSN into the cavity. Anybody else do this?
that guy did this too :D

Why not inlay the neck with your name like the old cowboys did in the 40s/50s!

A friend of mine used to carve his name somewhere on his guitar so if it got stolen he could ID it and oddly enough I bought a guitar off of him once and it was stolen from me and I knew what pawn shop it ended up at but since it wasn't my name I couldnt really do anything about it.
That's ridiculous. When it got stolen you should have declared it as having those marks on it. Eventually your friend could testify for you that he sold it to you. But anyways, say you carve the word "wanker" or any other word or even a drawing or symbol under the pickguard, that would be proof if you are sure that it is the same guitar, unless there is a manufacturer which carves that in all the guitars.

eh...I knew the people who stole it, they were the local tweakers that we would sometimes let party in our apartment. It's funny the one guy who I caught pissing in my sink one day, got drunk and climbed on top of the roof of the factory where he worked and the cops took all day getting him down, he said he wouldn't come down unless they hire him back which has got to be the funniest suicide/hostage demand!...And then a week later this same guy was on the news because some lightening had downed a live wire and this woman was trapped and this guy was able to get her away from the wire so he was the local hero. He was on the news being intereviewd and I was like, "Thats the guy that pissed in my sink!" THe last I saw of them one of them had a baby which we would sometimes watch as they went out and scored, one day the baby wasn't there any more and they said that the Mom had rolled over and suffocated it. We all knew that it wasn't an accident though, she would leave it everywhere and go smoke crack.
I probably should have kicked their ass but they had bigger problems.

When my flat mate moved out to live with his GF in 1994 or so, I started doing it for a while, just because I could. My sink is 3 ft away from my toilet, and in the same room....

You could put a bomb in it and when stolen you can ignite it remotely.

I had forgotten I did that until the other day when I swapped a pickup out and saw my SSN there...I really don't get the gaurding of ones SSN though. I googled a few fake SSN and got people's real names and addresses so its not like having a SSN instantly opens up peoples bank accounts.

Yeah - it's not so much people getting acces to your accounts, but people being able to run up debts in your name.

I just figure the sort of person who would steal your guitar, or who would receive your stolen guitar, is the last person you would want to give any personal details to.
