local file/image hosting?
I notice that most fora now allow attachments of a small-moderate size.
I'm sure hosting the data isn't free, but if we had that ability here it'd do a lot to help ensure that technical and project info remained intact to be searched in the future.
I'd imagine some of us might be willing to donate a bit to the cause if this functionality were included
Most image hosting sites now expressly prohibit remote linking as far as I can tell, which makes things tricky.
Any chance of this becoming a reality here?

That would be cool. Make it easier to share offset prøn.

I believe that’s been discussed but I can’t remember why it was decided against.

In the event it was a cost-related decision…
If there were a way for site users to donate small amounts, I wonder whether that would make a difference?

That may have been a factor, but my memory was it had something to do with the architecture of the site and it not being able to host pics. I could be wrong about that, I'm just going from memory. Maybe Tom or Jay can chime in on this.

Re: local file/image hosting?
There's an extension available for it. We may or may not have to update the current version of our phpbb in order to use it, I'm not sure.
I'm finally beginning to see a light at the end of the tunnel at my work so I'm hopeful I'll be able to begin a board migration in earnest in the next month or two. Given that, adding new features that would complicate the migration, both in terms of functionality and just raw size isn't high on my list.
Hosting our own images is, however, a great idea and something I want as well. I'll be migrating and assessing hosting costs with an eye towards making that a reality.
We're kind of just treading water with the modmin count, and expenses are being spread over the same number of people. I'm personally open to allowing contributions from users provided it's completely transparent and there's no special features, special flair, or special anything for those contributions other than the warm, fuzzy glow that comes with lending a hand to something we care about. First though let's see how our new hosting requirements compare to our current hosting requirements and what the impact on costs might be.

I had this great idea where, for only $20 per month, our members could enjoy a blue mark next to their name.

Too much? Okay, how about $8?

Re: local file/image hosting?
Sounds great!
A simple PayPal "donate" link at the top would probably be enough to get me to click on it now and again... I certainly wouldn't need any special cred or features.
GroupDIY has this, and I've clicked it a few times just because I've gotten valuable and helpful information for free from there.
I wouldn't even be bugged by the occasional Wikipedia-style "please help us cover costs by donating" message, if it was necessary to keep the site running. It hardly feels fair that the people doing actual work to keep this site running also have to pay out of pocket for it

Screw that, I want to be able to buy my way to obnoxious features like a triple-sized avatar, spelling out my username with a different colour for each letter, animated GIF signature, and a made-up but gatekept title like "Master Of His Domain, And This One Too."
