That specific and cool thing is my favourite delay sound...unfortunately for my bank balance. I keep going back to it no matter what I try as a replacement. Same as the RAT. Some things just work.marqueemoon wrote: ↑Tue Jan 24, 2023 12:17 pmI realize the DMM does a specific and cool thing, but this is firmly in the “not worth it” category for me.
Are 90s DMM reissues really selling for $600+?!

I got a Way Huge Supa Puss, trying to cop the DMM thing without shelling out for an older DMM, and it does the trick for me. Should you want to give something else a shot.johnnysomersett wrote: ↑Tue Jan 24, 2023 12:46 pmThat specific and cool thing is my favourite delay sound...unfortunately for my bank balance. I was just eyeing one of those up after accidentally stumbling on it. I almost skipped past due to the number of controls. But something made me check out video. The dotted eigth with modulation sounds cool. So does the gain, although could get messy when overdriven.Jonesie wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 8:50 amI got a Way Huge Supa Puss, trying to cop the DMM thing without shelling out for an older DMM, and it does the trick for me. Would it be a waste to buy something like that & only use it for one sound?
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

I mean, that's all I really do. I have the gain up about 1/4 of the way, same with the modulation. Tone is at about noon. I'll either do 1/4 or dotted eighth. Just because it has a ton of features doesn't mean you have to use them always. It'll be good for recording too.sal paradise wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 9:24 amI was just eyeing one of those up after accidentally stumbling on it. I almost skipped past due to the number of controls. I used to worry about owning pedals like that until I realized I can only use them for one sound at a time anywaysal paradise wrote: ↑Wed Jan 25, 2023 9:24 amWould it be a waste to buy something like that & only use it for one sound?

Re: Are 90s DMM reissues really selling for $600+?!
bumping this cuz i just discovered something...
So I have two here, one from '96 and one from '98-99. The '96 sounds like the original ones and they act the same way. The 98/99 one has true bypass, has the same PCB with two MN3005s but sounds different. Maybe this is a known thing but I had no idea.
'96: sounds and acts like the original version from the early '80s.
'99: delay repeats are brighter, almost digital-like (not really but compared to the '96) but the chorus/vibrato acts different.
- if the delay time is super short, the chorus & vibrato modes work like I'm used to with the '96.
- if longer delay times are used, the chorus knob doesn't do much until it's almost all the way up BUT chorus mode sounds like vibrato and vibrato still doesn't do much but have a slight chorus sounds
- If the wires that run from the 3PDT ftsw to the hot terminals of the dry and echo out jacks (blue & green wires) are too close to the transformer, you'll get hum in bypass mode.
- there's a small ceramic capacitor across the hot & ground terminals of the Echo Out jack, if this is broken the bypass sound will be dull.
I think I'm going to convert the '99 to '96 specs but it's kind of nice having those bright repeats. I've always considered the DMM to have a brighter sound but this is even brighter. It's kinda cool tbh. I can always switch it back but I miss having the usual vibrato & chorus sound with longer delay times.

Will it take more than changing that capacitor to convert to '96 specs? If that's all it is, you could wire the cap to a switch, and have instant toggle between '96 and '99 sounds.OffYourFace wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 3:26 pm- there's a small ceramic capacitor across the hot & ground terminals of the Echo Out jack, if this is broken the bypass sound will be dull.

No, you need to remove the true bypass ckt.Shadoweclipse13 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 4:07 pmWill it take more than changing that capacitor to convert to '96 specs? I had an idea a couple years ago where using a toggle switch (3PDT or 4PDT) could change a relay-based footswitch to a momentary switch. I wonder if you could do something similar here. Maybe with a rotary switch or something...OffYourFace wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 5:26 pmNo, you need to remove the true bypass ckt.Shadoweclipse13 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 4:07 pmWill it take more than changing that capacitor to convert to '96 specs? My buddy and band mate got a 90s DMM recently and paid quite a bit more than $600. It sounds killer though. You can check it out in a video we did a few months back. We went out to the desert to film this. You can hear the DMM clearly in the intro and the solo.

Re: Are 90s DMM reissues really selling for $600+?!
Coming back to this as I’ve found the chorus issue with the ‘99 DMM here. There’s a dual opamp (4558) that mixes in the chorus with the delay and one half was dead.
So if you have an earlier DMM reissue with the MN3005 chips and your chorus is not working, try replacing IC5. It’s right by the chorus/vibrato pot.
What an amazing sounding guitar pedal
Also, I got rid of the true bypass wiring and installed a nice heavy duty Carling DPDT switch. I just prefer it this way. It didn’t really sound like a classic DMM to me. It was also brighter with the TB ckt. So weird but whatever.
