Glad it got there in the end! Enjoy!andyman wrote: ↑Sun Apr 02, 2023 11:07 amFor those still interested, tech #2 said "no thanks, not sure I can fix this", at which point I took it to a slightly pricier tech #3 who said "hold my beer", set it up with 12s and had it back to me playing like a machine within a week. I'm so relieved.
Go tell your techs how much you love them.

Thanks. I'm just a little sore having paid for two setups, but I guess that's what you have to do sometimes....

Think of it as money saved - you'll never waste money on that first tech again!

Re: Intonation woes
Is there any other profession where 75% of the "techs" are incompetent morons? I probably don't want to know the answer... but this is a great source of frustration to me. So many of my peers have brought me instruments that were deemed "unfixable" or had utterly moronic work done to them for what are incredibly simple and basic setup procedures. I don't get it.

I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

In fairness, I think it's quite bad in the world of guitar techs (not the worst industry, but definitely a minefield). I've had more than one lacklustre experience, and the prices are particularly high compared to other "by the hour" professions.
Anything that's full of hobbyists turned pro is going to be like that I guess?

Re: Intonation woes
Small question to you aficionados of JM quirks: post setup, the G string (the problematic one) starts to buzz after playing for a couple of minutes. If I move the string around in the saddle it stops (temporarily, until I play for a few more minutes). The tech reckons this is caused by the bridge and a new, better one needs to be installed.
I would've assumed the issue was the saddle slot as this wasn't happening previously, doesn't happen with the other strings, and can be fixed (temporarily) by reseating the G string in the slot?
My god, it's never ending.

I wish I could help. I just want to say that it will be worth it.

Rather than being a Jazzmaster quirk, it's possible/likely the retainer wire on the Adjust-o-matic bridge.

If moving the string around in the saddle temp fixes it I would've thought it's not the retainer wire?andy_tchp wrote: ↑Wed Apr 12, 2023 6:29 pmRather than being a Jazzmaster quirk, it's possible/likely the retainer wire on the Adjust-o-matic bridge.

Easy enough to check (as per the link). There’s not a lot of other moving parts if the buzz is definitely being produced from/localised to the bridge.andyman wrote: ↑Thu Apr 13, 2023 2:48 amIf moving the string around in the saddle temp fixes it I would've thought it's not the retainer wire?andy_tchp wrote: ↑Wed Apr 12, 2023 6:29 pmRather than being a Jazzmaster quirk, it's possible/likely the retainer wire on the Adjust-o-matic bridge.

Re: Intonation woes
The wire didn't work, but thanks.
The tech elaborated: the saddle itself is likely worn and sitting loose on the bridge, hence the need for a new unit. He hipped me to a short-term fix that people try: dab some nail cheap polish under the saddle, pop the string on top and let it dry (flat) for about 30 mins.
Hope that's of use to someone someday!
