Re: fender Jazzmaster J mascis pickups
AlNiCo 2's instead of the 5's of the PV65 pickups, that's going to sound a whole lot warmer. Colour me interested!

Also saw these and very curious how they sound and compare to the PV65s in sound.

Re: fender Jazzmaster J mascis pickups
PV65s:
DCR 6.8 kOhm
Inductance 3.2 H
(neck and bridge the same)
A5
Mascis:
DCR 7.3 kOhm (same for neck and bridge)
Inductance 3.7 H (bridge) 3.6 H (neck) - likely just measurement variability, so basically the same inductance for both (as for DCR)
A2

So, not quite late '50s/early '60s spec but closer than the '65s.

Will be interesting to compare to the specs on the new (?) pickups on the Vintera II 50s JM (when the service manual eventually drops). Those are currently described simply as "Vintage-Style '50s Single-Coil Jazzmaster".

I am intrigued by these.
Fender website says they have them in stock.

Re: fender Jazzmaster J mascis pickups
J used to use SD Ant I's in his guitars. These are basically fender's version of that pickup.

Re: fender Jazzmaster J mascis pickups
Both SD Antiquity sets (I & II) have substantially higher DCRs (8.2-8.6 kOhms) than the Mascis JMs (7.3 kOhms).

Re: fender Jazzmaster J mascis pickups
Yes but don’t read too much into that. Sometimes those printed specs aren’t totally accurate with both SD and fender pickups. My point is that the pickups are nothing special. The slightly lower output would make them more useable for pedal-based gain staging and IME, more amp sim/IR friendly for the modern user. Anyway, I tried a set as they were very cheap with my artist discount. I can’t recall how they read on my meter. I want to say 7.4k neck and 7.8k bridge. But I found them to be very vanilla compared to my Sunday handwired set and I gave the JMJMs to a friend. He likes them. They replaced stock CIJ pickups.
I also do not like the AV65 JM pickups. To me they sound a little lifeless compared to the SD Ant IIs. But I’ve heard them sound great in a few stock guitars that a friend uses live so ymmv. I don’t mind the Jaguar version tho.
J seems to put his name on anything. Like why did his sig models (fender and Squier) come with P90 style pickups when he swaps them out himself? And the EHX big muff is just a RH reissue with different graphics.
I have to say, the normal SD vintage models (SJM-1) are really good. I like them better than the Antiquities. The middle position is a little more scooped than I like on some guitars but some people really like that. They just sound good in every situation IMO.

Re: fender Jazzmaster J mascis pickups
Fair point about DCR. Both its relevance and its variability. Unfortunately it's about all you get from SD. Fender quote +/-10% on their DCR specs. And also usually now provide inductance figures on their pickups. But they don't say how they measure it (there are good inductance meters and poor ones). But antigua's inductance readings for the PV65's (using the good DE5000 meter) match Fender's at 3.2H. The Mascis's are 3.6-3.7H according to Fender.

If Seymour Duncan provided more useful specs like inductance on their pickups we'd know the answer more clearly as to how much the Antiquity I's and II's (and their hot JM, vintage JM, quarter-pound JM) likely differ from the Mascis ones.

Re: fender Jazzmaster J mascis pickups
I'll check the DCR on the Ant IIs in my gf's Jazzmaster when I get a chance. I seem to remember they were in the 7.8k range but it's been awhile. They used to be in my guitar years ago.

Re: fender Jazzmaster J mascis pickups
Do you recall the Fender Mascis set had the "patty" coil (low and wide), or was it more VMOD like (narrow & tall)?
