i like eminence 1058s in my vibrolux. doesn't fart out on the speakers so much as the circuit crumples into fuzz when you crank it and hit a low note.

I was going to say check those caps first! It didn’t sound like a speaker problem to me. I’ve had a number of things I’ve worked out on my SFPR. The most annoying, difficult to troubleshoot was an intermittent flub and crackle sound on lower frequencies. Turned out to be a loose solder joint (my own fault) probably from some experimenting. That evaded me for a loooong time. I was trying everything including swapping speakers.

My long time speaker (at least more than 10 years) has been a Weber 10F150-T 25w, no dope. It’s perfect and has been in so long it’s my baseline for everything. Had a 10F150 50w that was really great too. Wish I’d kept it.

I have an early 00s Weber C10-N in my 6G2. It’s basically a 10F150 25w before they renamed them. Great sounding in either amp.

I’m pretty settled on speakers but still get curious about Celestions or Jupiters sometimes. I’d also love to try an old Fender branded Oxford. The original from my PR is torn up pretty bad. I guess it could get reconed someday.

Around my neck of the woods when I did this 10-15 years ago, it was the Weber 10F150, or the brighter 10F150T. I got the 10F150, 8ohms, 25 watts, with light doping. I selected this at the time because it was the clear consensus favorite, and I have absolutely no regrets. Still sounds phenomenal and is loud as hell with plenty of headroom. Nice tight bass.

I bought a mint condition ‘66 PR out of NC around 10 years ago. It had had some minor work done, caps, 2 prong changed to 3 etc. and a Weber 10F150T, 8ohms, 25 watts with light doping fitted. It’s a beautiful speaker and seems to have more headroom than I was expecting. They say to go for the 50 watts if you want less breakup. But I can play plenty loud with a 5 piece and the cleans are great with room for pedals to do their thing.

I can't even get my 25 watter loud enough to break up without basically shattering my windows... honestly couldn't imagine needing more volume out of it!

me too. I think I sit a smidgeon over 5 when playing with 2 other guitars, bass & drums. Probably starting to break up around 7, but so, so loud.

Yes! Suprised how loud the Webers are! My experience exactly. I gigged with mine and it was fine in smaller venues. Most of the time it was at 3-4! With a heavy handed drummer friend I got it to 5-6 but the speaker was still nice and solid. I’d rather have that than an underpowered thing. Way less predictable even though speaker breakup can be a really cool sound.

... and it arrived (sent Monday from NH, arrived two days later in Seattle with USPS ground advantage?!!)
I haven't cranked it but it sounds really nice at practice volume. 8 ohms, 50 watts. Somehow "more comfortable" and "guitar-like" than the JBL e110 it is replacing. (I felt I always had to turn down the treble with the JBL to make it less... strident, for lack of a better term)

Update 2:
… and it sounds pretty great. Way louder than the stock speaker or even the JBL.

I believe it’s the style of cone. Both are great in a PR. I can confirm!

There are a few designations - What’s in a name - tedweber.com

• 10[A/F]150 – no letter – punchy, warm, has a nice balance between low and high (low end is strong) and is a very general-purpose cone
• 10[A/F]150-O – “original” style smooth cone for early breakup and low detail
• 10[A/F]150P – “pup”, as in the same cone that is used on our Blue Pup. bright and chimey, mix of american and british sounds, though decidedly more british. high headroom.
• 10[A/F]150H – hemp cone, very soft material, darker, warmer, foggy and less focused. Hemp’s longer fibers give treble notes a sub-harmonic richness that warms the sound. great for that hazy stoner metal thing where articulation isn’t the objective. it cuts the treble, but it also affects the overall response and feel to be more squishy.
• 10[A/F]150T – accentuates treble and headroom. adds articulation. (this is the same cone as the standard 10A125)

From using my new Princeton w/ attenuator a fair bit, I’m not loving how the stock speaker sounds at breakup. I’m unsure about whether to swap the speaker or make a move on a low wattage bassman style head.

I was thinking about going for a 20W speaker. Hard to find some of the more popular brands in the UK, but thanks to some advice from JSett I was looking at the Eminence George Alessandro 10-SC64.
