Re: Low gain OD/ boost preamp
I'm using a Fairfield Barbershop for this purpose. Have it set for a nice signal boost with Drive set quite low. To my ears it adds just a bit of tonal richness and oomph. With my guitar's volume set around 8 everything stays nice and clean. Roll it up to 10 and dig into the strings and I get a pleasing growl.
There's just something wonderful about that on-the-edge-of-break-up tone.

I've put a request in to see availability on the Page from Kingsley. I've only ever heard amazing things about them and the demos sounds really, really nice.

Re: Low gain OD/ boost preamp
5 - 6 weeks until it's built, my order is placed. Probably be about £300 all in with import etc.
I'm thinking this will be placed at the end of my chain where a Klon KTR currently resides. I think the Page will push my Bassman really nicely with less drive and less mids than the KTR, and then I can sell the KTR and have some extra cash to piss up the wall

Re: Low gain OD/ boost preamp
I've almost always based my main sound on a low gain OD/distortion, and used a second similar pedal either in front (to boost the gain) or after (to boost the volume). Lately that's evolved into having two identical pedals, with the second one set a little louder than the first one (same settings otherwise), and using different combinations of them to get 4 different levels of dirt and volume. Right now it's two OD-3s, but I've also used two BD-2s, BD-2 + OD-3, OCD + RAT, two RATs, two Red Llamas, TS9/SD-1 + DOD250, and probably a few other combos of those pedals I'm forgetting right now.

I certainly will!MechaBulletBill wrote: ↑Fri Mar 15, 2024 5:39 amlet us know what you think of it when you get yours!
Sounds like a good justification for having 3 of the same pedal so you can boost going in to and after the middle pedal

Re: Low gain OD/ boost preamp
It’s funny, after all these years, I am finally discovering that you can get good sounds out of pedals without the gain full up. Who knew? Haha.
This isn’t some kind of metaphor

Same with the programmable EQ2 from Source Audio. That thing is really cool, but definitely expensive.marqueemoon wrote: ↑Sat Mar 16, 2024 8:49 amAPI makes and eq/boost pedal that looks sweet, but $$$.

Re: Low gain OD/ boost preamp
I actually did that a really long time ago, well, almost. I had a Vintage RAT going into a RAT2, going into a Turbo RAT. But from what I remember, I had dramatically different settings on them, so it wasn't quite the same thing.

Re: Low gain OD/ boost preamp
Some combo of DOD 250, red llama, and Rat has served me well for many decades.
And all of these can produce boost and low gain very well - yet with the turn of a knob (or a cascade from one into the next) ramp up into serious distorto-fuzz!
