that's sort of what i felt about the fz3 back when you could get them for about £40. more of a fuzzy distortion/od sound like a power boost or something. more sophisticated-sounding than a straight up fuzz. i feel the same about most tonebenders. i want them to go a bit wilder and muff-ier.

The FZ-1w is one of the best Boss pedals they've ever made. It's a bit on the polite side, but it's super flexible and has no bad sounds in it. At one point I had every fuzz Boss ever made (including the Tonebender) and the FZ-1w was the best one by far. The FZ-2 is crazier, that's the only one the Waza version wasn't really able to touch, but the FZ-2 is really only good for the over the top doomy fuzz tones anyway. A good sound, but the FZ-1w was overall a much more versatile and useful pedal.

A bandmate tried the FZ-1w and said it was excellent: “tame in the best way”. I think I now know what he meant.
I’m still tempted to try the FZ-5 because it seems to have a wider range despite being a very different animal.

I wanted one for a while and got one a few months ago and for some reason I haven't been able to get along with it. To me it just sounds kind of like a grown up Fuzz Face that doesn't clean up with the volume knob as well. I will pull it out tomorrow and give it another chance before I decide to sell it on.
