Very nice photos! It's always hard to figure out how much these things cost until the quote pops up!JSett wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 8:24 amOkay, so no figures from anyone yet but I have sent messages out to LA Guitars in London, Andy Warnock in Kent and Ian Allerton at Guitar Works, London. LA Guitars I need to call, Ian Allerton I'm currently in talks with. He sent examples of his work and they look great (pics below) but sounds like it'll be quite expensive - no ballpark yet.zhivago wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 12:25 amThey probably all have their own techniques of getting to the same place, the vintage Gibson crowd is similar to the vintage Martin crowd when it comes to repair work.
It is crucial the right people work on these old guitars, I learned that the hard way with my Martin.
Anyways, let us know how it goes

These look great!!! I will get in touch with him for sure!garyptaszek wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 8:29 amAndy has refretted 3 of my guitars, and done fret work, and nut work on many others.
Here’s some pics of my Tele Deluxe he refretted and made a new bone nut for.
So good that he is sort of near me too, for once...most of the time I have to travel across town to get anything done.

I am not sure when I'll start taking stuff down to him (still recovering from my boiler bill last week, so I am a bit broke and I still want buy a bass guitar of some sort within the next few weeks), but when I come up there I'll check if you're around.

I got a guesstimate back from Joseph Kaye:
...damn. That's a bit more than Yuuki was quoting Let's hope further numbers that come back are more sensible. £500 I could probably stomach, £850 is daylight robbery IMHO.Price wise : I’m guessing it would start at around £500 -
Could be a bit more ..
But I don’t see it being more than £850 all in

£850 is definitely on the high end ...I guess London prices and all that, but still...I too would be comfier around the £500 mark.JSett wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 8:59 pmI got a guesstimate back from Joseph Kaye:

It seems unlikely with the folks you’re considering that anyone is going to botch this, but there the potential to do a lot more damage to the value of the guitar than you will save by going cheap.

Yeah, I agree. Although I went to Guitar Village today and the owner there suggested a) just leaving it and b) keeping it forever.marqueemoon wrote: ↑Wed May 08, 2024 6:04 amIt seems unlikely with the folks you’re considering that anyone is going to botch this, but there the potential to do a lot more damage to the value of the guitar than you will save by going cheap.

Re: I'm back... 56 Les Paul Custom
After some real soul searching and grown-up thinking I've decided to be smart and sell this wonderful thing.
My reasoning goes as follows:
I'm 42 and self-employed. With that comes a constant underlying sense of anxiety of advancing age, staying busy with work and keeping everything financial nice and safe. I have some savings, but not enough that I could cover things for more than a few months of down time. Also, in the future, I'd quite like to go out on my own and have my own shop...that requires capital. Despite what my buying habits might imply, I'm not a wealthy person, it's mostly good luck and a little bit of skullduggery I'd be a LOT better if I could get to a stage that I have some proper "fuck you" money if I need to bounce from something for whatever reason.
If I keep it I have some serious bragging rights, a cool story and a fun guitar. If I sell it, all I lose really is the bragging rights, and I don't really care about that, and I still have great guitars. It turns out I value longer term financial and mental stability over this guitar. With the sale from this I can pay for a solid chunk of our Japan holiday, pay off the last few installments on the car, treat myself to something cheap-ish and save the rest (which will still be a lot).
I've made my decision. I have a potential buyer already that's hopefully coming Tuesday.
Let's see.
What a ride.

Well considered and thoughtful decision. Good luck with the sale. And good luck whatever you decide to do with the windfall from it.
