1962 Jaguar - finally!!

Well after years of wanting I was finally able to get one of my dream guitars, a 1962 Jag! I’m living and working out of town for 3 months and since it was my day off I decided to check out the handful of music shops that are open on Sundays. I walk into this shop in north Oakland and there on the wall is this beautiful sunburst Jag

The neck is stamped Sept 62, however someone in an offset Facebook group I’m in commented that the string tree is off alignment from the 5th string tuning peg, which is something that started in 1963? The bridge pickup has staggered poles, which made me think it’s not original, since the neck pickup has flat poles. Is it possible the guitar was assembled in 63 using some 62 parts? The nut is the only thing I’m certain is a replacement.

I won’t have a chance to look more into the guts of this thing until next week but I’m excited to see what the body date is and any other markings there might be!

Anyways, I’m absolutely floored by the guitar original parts or not! It sounds amazing and the neck is worn in just right!

The wear on the neck is just perfect. I always love seeing real-deal play wear, and how unique it is to the original player and playing style, as opposed to the the more generic "worn all over" look of modern relics.

Also interesting that the back of the neck is relatively natural in color, no reddish/amber.

I've never seen anybody modify a case like that either, they moved the pocket lid and neck rest to the opposite side. Maybe so the body doesn't move as much? Very odd

yeah I was confused... my first thought was, did they make left-handed cases? which would still be wrong

To the OP, I'd say one of the pickups was replaced, probably the bridge. Perhaps for something with more output?

Staggered poles on Jag pickups didn't start until mid-63, so the bridge pickup is a definitely later replacement.

Regardless, it looks like an awesome guitar!!

Yeah the bridge pickup being replaced by a 63 or later was my first thought as well. Definitely looking forward to taking the hardware off and seeing what the body and pot dates are!

And yeah no problem at all with sharing! I traded in a 78 SG Special ($1500) and paid $5600 including taxes. The sales tax is kinda crazy in Oakland at 10.25% lol. The guitar was tagged $7200 in the shop and they had it for like $8049 on Reverb
