peavey classic 50 tube suggestion

Post by clegg » Wed May 28, 2008 10:56 am

Hi.  I've had this amp for quite some time.  I do love the way it sounds thru pedals, its clean sound is also great, but I'm a little disappointed on how it ounds when overdriven with no pedals.

My bandmate uses a 1X15" peavey delta blues, and it sounds fantastic when overdriven.  Deep, dark, full, warm.  Mine sounds a thin, trebly, and has more of a cracky sound than a warm overdriven sound.

I'm thinking that maybe a tube swap would help thicken up the sound a little bit.  I'm not trying to make this amp sound like a delta blues, but I would like the amp to sound more full and overdriven when cranked.

Any sugestion on tubes I should put in there?

thanks for any advice you can provide.

thank you very much for the response.  I appreciate your response, and I'll definately look at it in detail

I'll have to make sense of what you wrote though, as I'm not very familiar on how it all works, and what does what.

I had a Weber speaker on an old Princeton, and it sounded great, but truth is, I'm trying to cut down on the cost right now as I'm on a very limited budget. I was hoping that a tube swap would be sufficient for now.

From what I read, the amp has Four EL84s and three 12AX7s.  What if I take the simple approach and purchase these:

4X  EL34:    http://cgi.ebay.ca/Matched-Quad-of-JJ-T ... dZViewItem

3X 12AX7:    http://cgi.ebay.ca/Three-NEW-jj-ECC83S- ... dZViewItem
