Aged pickup covers and knobs (UPDATED)

Post by stilwel » Sun May 25, 2008 5:19 am

Is there a good SINGLE source to get aged pickup covers and knobs that match?

Allparts has a lot of different knob colors to choose from, but they only have white pickup covers.

I want to make my white on black JM look like this:

Cool.  I just placed a big order of parts from Guitarpartsresource.

Aged pup covers, knobs, tips, and an import red tort guard.

I also picked up a new Allparts Mustang bridge and a Buzzstop combo on ebay for $62.

Not sure I'll want to use the Buzzstop or not, but for an extra $17 I'll take it.

Watch out for stuff ordered from them, I got a pickguard once that didn't quite fit and I just got Pickup covers and I had to sand a couple of the holes bigger because they wouldn't line up with the poles, I have novaks but the original AVRI pickup covers fit fine.

Yeah I hate to say it, but you likely just mixed an order for Japanese and US parts.  They're not all going to fit happily together.

What guitar do you have, CIJ or AVRI?

I can tell you from experience that aged white Fender pickup covers *will not* fit on a CIJ without modification to either the cover or the pickguard, or both.  That's with the stock pickguard.  Not sure about these replacement pickguards GPR sells but I would think they'd have to be the same.  I'm not even sure about the screw holes lining up, because the fit is seriously so far off that I couldn't even get mine to the point where I could attempt to screw them in.

Conversely, an import pickguard will not fit on an AVRI guitar.  But I'm guessing you have a CIJ or you'd already have the aged white covers, since that's all Fender USA makes.

I have a CIJ Jazzmaster.

I hope they fit, that's gonna seriously bum me out if they don't.  This stuff isn't cheap. :(

Well I hope you get lucky somehow with that new pickguard, but prepare yourself just in case.  CIJ and AVRI stuff is usually just slightly off, with a few exceptions.

You *can* probably modify both the pickguard and the covers enough so that they'll fit.  I'm not sure about the screw holes, but you can file some stuff down so they physically fit together.  I didn't do it because I only have my stock mint green pickguard and I don't want to mess it up - I actually like it.  Maybe you want to try it first on your stock pickguard if you think it's boring anyway.

I've got my aged white covers sitting up in a spare bedroom unused right now :(  but no big whoop, I like the real white Japanese covers anyway, they just don't quite fit my US pickups right!  So I did end up having to file them a bit to get the pickups inside them... figured that was better than filing my pickguard to fit the US covers.  (btw, that's another thing - CIJ pickups won't automatically fit in US pickup covers, and vice versa.)

I ordered aged pickup covers from them, and they fit my Novaks nearly perfectly.  The knobs probably won't fit, due to the tiny shafts on the CIJ pots.  :(

Time to upgrade to CTS pots and cloth wiring.  :)

Yeah, they won't fit into a CIJ pickguard.

Basic rule is:

Aged white = US pickups
Pure white = Japanese pickups

I searched, and I couldn't find any covers that broke that rule.  I needed new covers when I bought my Antiquity II's and I couldn't find either pure white to fit the pickups or aged white to fit the pickguard.

The pole pieces are spaced differently and the pickups themselves are a slightly different length and width (CIJ are smaller).

Strange.  I put the aged covers on my CIJ pickups before I got my Novaks.  They fit fine with my pickguard, too...

Then either you or I have some wacky production run of pickups and pickguards.  But I've heard plenty of other people (on *cough* other boards) who say the same thing I'm saying.

It is totally clear on mine, the CIJ pickups do not fit US covers and the Japanese covers do not fit US pickups.  I have tried.  They are made specifically for their own respective combination.

Maybe they changed specs at some point, I dunno.

Strange. I thought our guitars were pretty close in production date...Mine's a mid '07.

Could be a different style of pickup cover?  ???

+1

The differences:

The screw for the holes are a little smaller, the distance between the poles holes (to fit the Novak I had to file the CIJ ones) and I got to push a little the AVRI neck pu cover, but it fits!
