'73 (too) heavily worn competition Mustang

Sorry about the bad quality. The owner doesn't really like pictures so I had to zoom in on them in a badly lit shop.

I have an option on this 73 competition mustang. What's original? The neck, body, tuners and pickguard.
If somebody else is interested, let me know. The price is somewhat fair for it's condition - but definitely not a bargain.

My main concern is the finish. The clear coat turned really yellow but also sticky in some spots and it has weird "scratches" which almost look like a bad sanding/polishing job. The fretboard has also a weird film over it. Does this sound like a bad clear coat refinish?

Might be some overspray. If it helps on the price negotiation it'll make this one even more fun!

With a little advice from Pat, I did take it home. It plays nice, sounds nice acoustically and electric. Just not sure if I want to upgrade a bit on the "I went through hell and back look".

In the end it seems like they took of a minimal amount of the pickguard, so maybe I'll just upgrade the pickups and consider a tremolo.

Looks like the grizzled team of veterans / samurai / cowboys getting together to right one last wrong. I'd say keep it as-is, you always have the option to change your mind.

Regarding the yellowed, sticky finish - that might be nicotine stains, dirt and grime. (If it's finished with nitro lacquer then yellowing is normal as it ages).

Try cleaning it with a damp rag. Naphta is also safe to use on nitro (with proper ventilation).

How much overlap is there between the studs for the stoptail and where the thimbles should be?
