Re: Boss BD-2 tone mods question
Another update.
Changing the 100k slope resistor to 56k (along with the cap changes above) definitely gives it a Marshall in a box type of sound. It’s pretty cool but I don’t think it’s what I want. It definitely affects the output section. There’s now a touch sensitivity that’s more uh, sensitive.
In my experience, this is a lot like changing the slope resistor in an old Marshall. When you go from 56k to 33k you get a more aggressive mid bark that makes the amp seem a bit louder. I find it very interesting that the pedal reacts in a similar matter. I’m going to play around with that 15k resistor I mentioned in the post above. I’m going to try 10k and see what happens.
Oh and btw, the fizz is gone but a new kind of fizz is present. That spitty Marshall kind of thing is there now. I can dial it out though as the tone control has more range now.

Re: Boss BD-2 tone mods question
EDIT: Ok here’s my final final update for tonight.
I tried a lot of different configurations and here’s what I settled on. You only need to change TWO components.
- Change C35 to .022 and change C18 to .047
This makes it more like a “Super Reverb” with these values. It sounded great with just guitar, pedal and amp when I only changed C35 but it got a bit flabby and tubby with other pedals in the mix. I changed C18 (a typical mod for tightening up bass) and now I’m happy.
I had also changed R51 from 15k to 10k to trim some high mids. It sounded great with a bridge pickup but a bit muddy with a neck pickup. So I changed it back to 15k
In the end, I’m psyched that it only took two components to get to this point. Will it work for you? Idk but let us know in this thread if you try it.
The Marshall-y tone stack was fun but sounded kinda too butt rock with higher gain settings.

Re: Boss BD-2 tone mods question
Sorry I made an edit to my last post. Now I’m happy…
I think haha.
I wanted to find a mod that’s the least invasive and I’m pretty happy with this. Basically you just need to buy 1 capacitor, a .022. When you remove the .047 from C35, you can use it to replace the .1 for C18. Easy Peasy.
Btw the guitars I’m using are a 50s style parts Strat with ‘62 style pickups and my Marr jaguar. Also, my speaker is a Celestion Gold. I’ve used a Celestion H75 creamback and a Jupiter C12N copy in the past. I feel like the Gold combines the best of both.

Re: Boss BD-2 tone mods question
This is why I grabbed a Digitech Screamin' Blues. It's a BD-2 with treble and bass controls. Probably not as easy to mod as a hole-thru Boss though.OffYourFace wrote: ↑Sun Feb 16, 2025 2:03 pm
Ideally there would be two knobs on the pedal for treble and bass but I’ll live.
Just needs some kind of sticker to cover up the appalling name.

I’m not familiar with this pedal but that’s interesting.tequila_in_teacups wrote: ↑Mon Feb 17, 2025 5:56 pm

I’ll have to look into that one.
I’m still very happy with my two cap mod.

Re: Boss BD-2 tone mods question
I got to compare my modded BD-2 to a Waza BD-2 yesterday. I’m happy with the mod. Tonally it sits between the stock and the custom mode, not as bright as the standard and not as dark as the custom. It’s exactly what I wanted.

Re: Boss BD-2 tone mods question
Do my two cap mod on one and see what you think. It doesn’t change the vibe of the pedal at all, just a slight shift in the upper mids. It would be good to hear someone else’s thoughts on it.
