As somebody that works in tech that hears things like that all the time (i.e., the cloud is really just somebody else's computer), I translate that as "use of the plugin requires constant authentication via an internet connection".

Previous poster is mistaken/has misinterpreted 'something' (that I cannot find anywhere in the product literature).
Yep, I sure did. Apologies for muddying the water, but at least I brought out a raft of experts. :D

Constant authentication would be a right pain in the arse with my set-up for sure.

I also remembered after posting that the Black Friday deal was for any 4 studio plug-ins, or some such, and I fancied some of the compressors, etc. that I'd used in my friend's studio.

Having spent thirty years within the education system in the UK, I tend to make very harsh judgments about people who offer opinions on teachers. The market is a parasite on the backs of those of us who teach, nurse, look after children, care for the elderly etc. The tragedy of our culture - and the USA's - is that people have been taught to believe the utter lie that the opposite is true. During the pandemic, we didn't need hedge fund managers...

Now, has anyone tried to play with effects pedals going into a UA plug-in?
For the record, I'm an employee of the school system and, by and large, the teachers are great. My wife also has her EdD, her sister's special ed middle school teacher, my best friend is a high school art teacher, and my brother has his EdM.

I'm entrenched in education and a huge supporter of improving it, so I hope you don't think I'm shittalking teachers as a whole.

Unfortunately, all groups have examples that aren't stellar.

Thanks for clarifying - I appreciate it. Teachers get so much grief that I tend to be a bit touchy on that subject. Total respect to anyone who can survive in that system, let along thrive in it.

You got it! Teachers work so much harder than anybody gives them credit for and the American education system massively undervalues them. It's truly infuriating, and I get frustrated when a teacher tells me that they spent their own money on something that should be something purchased through the business office. I always try to direct them to an admin that has a budget that applies to the thing. Unfortunately, I only have purview over technology and digital services, and even then I'm not actually an administrator in the district sense, just the technology sense, so I can't handle purchasing myself.

My best friend is a high school art teacher (as I said above) and she often says that the only reason she got the job is because she's a native Spanish speaker (she's a Peruvian, and an immigrant at that). I often remind her that she's an amazing teacher that puts herself into her profession and gets results out of students that others have given up on, often helping them find their way to success. This is my tenth year in the district and I always point out that I've never seen any other teacher have as many graduated students come back to visit as she does.

There are some teachers that give the fantastic ones a bad name and they're thankfully a tiny minority. Unfortunately, though, they end up being the focus. Also, unfortunately, those are the few that I'm still battling with to correctly enter grades into our SIS, which isn't rocket surgery!

Fair play to you, teachers are like most groups of people: a bit of a cross-section. I've worked with a few I definitely couldn't get along with - mostly the ones that weren't interested in the kids as human beings.

…and back to the UAD plugins…they are plugins…you install and run locally on your computer. Latency is set by your DAW/interface settings. They take pedals in front just fine. The models sound genuinely wonderful. The biggest issue I have with their models is that I need to juice the output gain in the plug-in for some reason to boost the overall output volume.

That said I generally prefer the Neural DSP plugins…the Morgan models are fantastic. I also use their ToneKing model for some additional Fender tones and the Fortin Cali for Plexi and higher gain tones. I also love MixWave’s Benson Chimera collection. They have fantastic effects built in that work on their own and mixed in with my own pedals upfront. Another advantage of NDSP and MixWave are they also run as stand-alone app on your computer, which I prefer when just playing/writing.

They all offer demo versions so just download them and try them out with your setup…. also teachers rule!
