Thanks for the info and pics. It looks even better with the larger pics and I bet it sounds great. I have a D'urbano humbucker sized FB pickup in my pawn shop '51. Great pickup.

Not had everything out and together for a while.

I think a Jaguar needs to go to make room for a 335.
Yeah, gonna need to see more pictures of that Falcon. You know. For science. hah.

Ok, go on then!

It's a Gretsch G6136T. 2008/2009 maybe? My memory's not great. I bought it with the money I saved in the first few years of apprenticeship - the money was supposed to go on my first car and insurance but I spent the lot on this instead. My parents were not happy!

I've only gigged it a couple of times, generally it's played at home or used for recording. The filtertrons sound fantastic, like tamed P90s.

Thank you! I love my new Gretsch, but a White Falcon is the dream. I want one of the ones with the vertical logo that is comically large. Love 'em. Thanks, Chris Cheney.

They're absolutely huge and ridiculously gaudy, but they're really fantastic :-*
I chose this model because I'm really in to the 'neo-classic' inlays on the fretboard. I've never been a fan of block inlays. It's the only reason I don't own a Jet, I just can't find one with dynasonics and not block inlays :(

What's your new Gretsch?

Player's Edition Anniversary on the right is the newer one. I've had the Player's Edition DuoJet next to it for about a year.

I prefer the 'neo-classic' (i.e., thumbnail) inlays over block inlays - unless I want to go full on kitsch mode with a Gretsch G6120-1955 (formerly designated as G6120DSW).

Image

or the G6121-1955 Chet Atkins (or the Roundup version)

Image

I used to own both but I traded the G6120DSW for a Silver Jet (since moved on) and had to sell the G6121-1955 (yes, with Duane Eddy's signature from a Gretsch Roundup (Gretsch fan gathering in Nashville) :fp: ) due to gear debt at the time.

I was never a fan of the block inlays on the Falcon. Fortunately, I got a 2021 G6136TG Players Edition Falcon with the neo-classic inlays. I'd have preferred the horizontal logo over the obnoxious vertical one but the midnight sapphire finish surpassed my issue with the logo. Here is the Falcon with my other bird, a 2023 G6134T-140 Limited Edition 140th Double Platinum Penguin, and my 2015 G6196T-59 Vintage Select ’59 Country Club .

Image

Is the desire for dynasonic pickups tonal, aesthetics, or both? There's no incorrect answer of course. :) FWIW, if it's a tonal preference (single-coil tone), our pal Mike (Embenny - greatly missed) recommended to me the TV Jones Magna'Tron pickups. It truly has the dynasonic tone in humbucker form, which I find to be a plus for being noiseless. I've got Magna'Trons in the Country Club and moved the stock TV Jones Classics to my 2006 G6120BS Chet Atkins Hollowbody (currently known as Nashville).

You could get a G6128T (or G6129T) Players Edition Jet FT and swap out the stock HS Filter'Trons for Magna'Trons, or if you prefer the dynasonic single-coil aesthetics as well, pop in some TV Jones T-Armond pickups in the Universal mount form. Here's my G6120BS when it had TV Jones T-Armond pickups (before I swapped them out with the TV Jones Classics).

Image

I also had TV Jones T-Armonds in the traditional Dynasonic mount in my Gretsch Astro-Jet build ('65-'68 body with custom neck) before I decided to go noiseless with a set of Fralin Dynasonic pickups. Here's the before and after.

Hopefully, these are some useful options for consideration. :)

Surfy, you're a fountain of knowledge, thank you!

The dynas are a preference for sound and appearance reasons. I have the filtertrons covered in the Falcon, and so my next Gretsch needs the Dynas.
I had never looked in to the magnetrons, so thank you for bringing those to my attention. Definite food for thought there.

I've got my heart set on a 335 for my next purchase, but a Jet is next on the list. Since building the guitar rack in my original pic it has set my limit to 7 guitars/basses. Seems pretty reasonable to me, and as a wedding and children are on the fast approaching horizon I'm more than happy to stick to a 1-in 1-out policy.

Your Gretsch guitars all look wonderful, I'm always amazing by how much gear you have or has passed through your hands!

Well, hey, if you hate it that much and want it gone I have a LOVELY (cheaper) Gretsch that I'd be happy to do a straight trade for, hahaha.

You're most welcome! I'm as much a Gretsch fan as a Fender fan, so I'm very happy to pass on information and experiences I've acquired along the way. Heh, it's been a fairly expensive (at times) education. Most of that was prior to my marriage in 2016...my wife is very patient and I'm doing my best to downsize (slowly but surely). :derp:

Ha! The Midnight Sapphire finish is so stunning to me and the 2.5" body depth on the Players Edition Falcon make it a keeper for me, vertical headstock be damned. ;D

Please forgive my rambling musings...

It has crossed my mind to put up for sale some of my Gretsch guitars in order to pay for that new Penguin and my recently acquired '60 Fender Super. I've got my 6120-sized guitar covered - the 6120BS Chet Atkins Hollowbody. I should move it on since I very rarely play it as I prefer the CC and Falcon (I like the bigger-sized Gretsch guitars) but I gigged with the 6120BS (blueburst) so there's a ton of emotional attachment that I find difficult to break away from. I have given it up twice before - sold it to a friend (about a year later, bought it back) and traded it to Mike (Embenny) and then got it back from him in another trade. I can't quit you, 6120BS! :'(

I'm not having much luck moving on my Johnny Marr Jag, which in the current climate - lots of great gear listed in OSG's For Sale section isn't moving. Believe me, I'm tempted on that listed AVRI '62/'65 hybrid Jag :? but I don't need it. Especially if the Marrguar stays put, which I'm kind of/sort of relieved to be able to keep it if that's how it plays out - it's a terrific guitar.

The most sensible thing for me to do is move on some of my vintage Fender amps - it's a bit ridiculous for me to own three amps from the same era that pretty much are similar tonally ('60 Super, '62 Pro, and '63 Bandmaster). So I'll likely put up for sale one or two of them. As for my modern amps, I don't think I'd have a problem moving on my Magnatone Twilighter or my Fender '62 Princeton Chris Stapleton Edition. The other day, I noticed that it's no longer listed in the Artist SIgnature amp section on Fender's site.

First world problems and all that... :-[

Haven't done one of this in a long time, and I always decide to do this when the light is already leaving the room !

Had to split the lot in three groups :
First, the 6-stringers :
Image
Gibson J29, my wife's entry level Yamaha acoustic now strung with flatwounds for a great thumpy sound, my trusty prototype-style Jazzmaster, and my first guitar, the good old modded to hell Epiphone G-310

The 7-stringers :
Image
Monster Esquire with the original neck from the Ibanez, Harley Benton fanned fret model modded with lipsticks, and Ibanez AX7521 with a defretted neck and a Sustainiac.

The 4-and-less-strings-club :
Image
DIY two strings fretless instrument, inspired by the Dutar, DIY hollowbody bass with a Cort neck, squier bronco with an 8-string guitar humbucker, and Lag ukulele.

I got the home crew and the studio crew together:

Most proud of my Thin Skin RI Burgundy Jag and the 71 JM I got literally in pieces as part of a trade and glued her back together.

To pick up the recent Gretsch vibes here I included my Superaxe. Got her on a local deal and it got me serious Smiths Vibes. But I really don’t know what to to with her 🤣.
