Full HB-sized Firebird-ish pickups?

Post by mynameisjonas » Tue Apr 29, 2025 10:52 pm

I have a guitar project on the way that I'm intending to use as my dedicated B standard/drop-A guitar, and I've come to the conclusion that the perfect pickup for that would be a Firebird style pickup. I know I could get some sort of conversion ring, but I'd prefer a full sized humbucker format to keep the guitar looking somewhat stock. It doesn't have to be exactly like a bigger Firebird pickup, anything that's in the same ballpark would be of interest.

So, what are my options?

Hy Jonas.
I know of D‘Urbano Big Birds (I beliebe they are from Australia) and I myself got a set of Rübezahl Tonabnehmer (now Heavy Horse Electronics) from Germany.

I have a set of regular sized Firebird pickups from D'Urbano, they're fantastic. I didn't realize (or had forgotten) he made big ones too. My only concern is the time they took to ship the last time, it was even worse than when I've ordered stuff from China.

I'll look into the Tonabnehmers, thanks!

I was going to say that sounds like something Tim at Sunday Handwould could do.

Then I realized that it's actually an on-menu item right on the site.

Lollar has "The Bird".

I've had their regular Firebird pickup, and it did what it says on the tin - bright and powerful.

Lindy Fralin’s Big Single is a riff on the Bill Lawrence sidewinder patent. It’s a hum-cancelling design with a single-coil magnet aperture, stock format is standard humbucker size.

I’m a fan of the custom P90 variant, myself. ;)

Thanks for the tips, guys! :)

I hadn't heard of Sunday Handwound before, those seem really nice.

Tim used to be a regular here several years ago, although seems that he's kept too busy with orders to be a regular on any forum these days.

My Epiphone Firebird had full-sized humbuckers which I never liked - I replaced them with humbucker-sized P90s from Q Pickups which are excellent. They're based in Croatia but ship worldwide (and coincidentally they're doing a 10% discount until 5th May).

All the major bases covered here. I'll just add the GFS Surf 180s which they sell as a Surf 90 HB (DeArmomd 2000), have the 3×3 pole piece spread of a WRHB, but for my money are most similar to the Q pickups in my Firebird. The look might not be for everyone but one could solder them into different covers of need be.
If it wasn't for disappointment, I wouldn't have any appointments.

Another vote for D’urbano Big Birds. An added benefit is that when coil split they sound really jangly. Got them within 3 weeks when I ordered a year or so ago.
