1968 stratocaster
This guy I work with has an original 68 stratocaster. He had the neck replaced in 1980, because the original needed a refret and he decided it was cheaper to change the neck.
FORTUNATELY he has the original neck.
How much would this guitar be worth? It is in immaculate condition, and has the original case too.
I just dont want him to sell it and get screwed.

Re: 1968 stratocaster
I can't do that. He would find out eventually and I would have to come clean.
If he were filthy rich and didnt care, well in that case ...
But he works with me and we certainly arent rich.
I bet he could sell the neck for a pretty penny.
and keep the rest of the guitar.

Re: 1968 stratocaster
I'd advise him to keep the guitar, including the neck. That's the most valuable single part of the guitar.
I'd think that if the guitar was in good condition, it would be worth quite a bit. Look at similar vintage Jazzmasters, they're fetching upwards of $5000! What color is it? Custom colors are worth much more.
Tell him to insure it, and pass it down to his children.

Sure, Steven. I know about how you "bought" your own grandmother's cherry 1966 GTO for $200, because it had a burned out taillight, and "wasn't worth fixing". Poor granny.

You can help Martin "smoke" that 6 year old, and that should satisfy the bloodlust.

Re: 1968 stratocaster
$10k - $15k for a sunburst. At least double for custom color. Tell him not to sell off the neck and to keep it with the the body - the body will lose a lot of value if he does. Spend $150 on a pro refret and keep it all together. And '68 is the "Hendrix year" for Strats so it will be worth more than other CBS era Fenders.

Should have robbed him blind!
"oh... you've removed the neck? that seriously harms the value... i'll give you a grand, two tops, but after that really i'm pushing what its really worth. I'm paying you to take it off your hands more than anything."

I can't believe there is $15K worth of guitar in any guitar unless its carved out of diamonds or something. Crazy Vintage markets.

Re: 1968 stratocaster
I sent him the thread this morning. He said " I dont want my wife to see this, because she will try to make me sell it".
I then had to school him in lying about what and how many guitars you have to your wife.
(of course that wouldnt fly with Maggio - she would keep it for herself)
He never sells any of his guitars. He will have it refretted and put the original neck back on, and save it for his kids or make a shrine out of it.
I told him to go out and get a cheap squire and let his kids play with that, until they are old enough to appreciate what it is.
He also has a 79 ES135.
He actually lent his 68 strat to some dink friend of his about 10 years ago and the guy was pissed when he asked for it back.

That's great that he's keeping it. A good guitar is more than wood, plastic and metal...
