You could get a REAL one for less than 1950... I sold a 78 for $1600...

They are a bitch to find, but do pop up on CL now and again.. don't spend more
than $500

Well, 1950 is new, but yeah, I would definitely find one used.

I don't play bass, figured it would be a good one to start on and if I like it etc then I will get a Ric, I love them so much, DFA 1979 and Joy Division got me hooked on them

Since you're in U.S.A., the best thing you can do is keep an eye out for lawsuit copies from the late seventies and early eighties. Such basses, from e.g. Ibanez, can be found on E-Bay every now and then, though not often. New copies simply don't exist where you live, since Rickenbacker is very protective about their designs. However, there are two brands that I know of that market and sell Rickenbacker copies in the E.U. - I wonder for how much longer.

But anyway, if the new Classic Vibe line from Squier will be as good as their Vintage Modified one, you'll probably be well off buying one of those instead.

Bach, a Czech guitar manufacturer makes R*c 4004 copy's, for an affordable price (250€)

Those actually look quite nice - in a Laredo/Cheyenne kind of way - and I hear that Bach instruments are quite a bit better than what the low prices may suggest. However, it may not be that easy (or inexpensive) importing one to the U.S.

schecter's on the wagon, too.  Still, for $700, I'd spend a bit more and get a real one:

+1 on the Greco/Ibanez/Whatever lawsuit basses

I have an early 70's 4001 clone wich I just upgraded with real Ric parts - It's built like the real thing and plays fabulous. The tuners are usually crap and of course the electric stuff (pots/switch/wire/pups. I payed $80 for the bass and something like 300- 400 or so for the upgrade parts.

I've seen a brand called Eagle lately having 330 and 360 Ric guitar clones - I haven't seen if they actually have basses too.
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

They do.

Shine is another company that make Ric copies nowadays, and Indie yet another, since just recently. However, I don't think that any of these models will be easy to find in the U.S. of A.
