Portable Bass Amp recommendations?

Post by chrisjedijane » Sun May 11, 2008 3:30 am

I've been thinking for a while now that I need to buy a new bass amp. I have an idea of the sound that I want - I really like Ampeg stuff, and anything that enables you to make the preamp clip would be good.

Here's the thing: It needs to be small. Our guitarist plays a Laney VC15, and I need to have an amp that will fit in the back of a Rover 25 with ease, as there's no point in me getting an amp if I can't take it anywhere.

Power-wise, I guess anything over 100W would be sufficient. I'm not fussy about speaker types either.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

How about this one? http://www.ampeg.com/products/bassamp/ba115/index.html

I tried one at a local music store a couple weeks back and it sounded pretty good to me. I tried it with a Fender P-bass and a MusicMan Sub 5. You use a Jazz bass, right? I don't know how it'll sound with that, but I bet it'll sound pretty good.

Yeah, I use a passive Jazz bass. I like the look of that, actually.

The main problem really is the depth of the amp - many of the bass amps I've tried are deeper than the boot of the Cutawaysmobile. I think I'm gonna have to make some measurements :D

what about this one?

the 10" speakers might not be too good, but I think they also sell them separately and you can get a small 12" or 15" by another manufacturer.

That looks really cool. I love 10" speakers anyway, 8x10s are great. I'd definitely want to try it out before I bought it, though...

I own the 100 and it's a little monster. There is a gain control, and, at 14" deep, it's pretty compact.
Bigger in sum than parts.

Genz Benz has a new series of light and small bass amps. I haven't read much about these in terms of reviews, but most their other products are excellent. I have a Genz Benz bass rig and it is niiice.

EDIT: These are a lot more expensive than the Ampeg, btw, but probably a fair bit nicer.

Take a look at the Phil Jones Bass Amps. They are light and they sound great.

yeah i'm a vintage tube amp purist and corksniffer... but for bass i must admit that Peavey is a very good and cheap option.

a Basic 60 combo or one of them "black widow"-speaker'd combos REALLY got a lot of ballz!
get one used and cheap. you won't regret!

I am going to have to try and find a nice, smallish bass combo amp for my daughter. I just bought her a 1977 Fender Mustang Bass and sahe will soon need a better amp to go with it. She needs somethinbg fairly small and lightweight, but that has a little power. Maybe 50 or 60 watts, or I can't find one in that range that is lightweight enough, perhaps a 30 watter would suffice. I don't really want to go less than that, and that may be too small.

I am going to check out the Peavey's for sure. What about Carvin? Does anyone have any experience with their bass amps?

I don't know if you're still looking for a small bass amp, but if so, check out the Markbass items.  They're small, very light, usually in the 500 watt range and have some interesting preamp slope knobs that allow for a very Ampeg like tone.
