Allparts unfinished necks....Thoughts? Finishing tips?

Post by RumorsOFsurF » Sun Jun 29, 2008 3:15 pm

I've been thinking about buying an Allparts big headstock neck for my Yannismaster project, but it seems they only come unfinished...

How difficult is it to finish a neck?
Should I just buy a can of clear from Reranch or Stew-mac?

Has anyone else had experience with Allparts necks?  Are they decent?

1 MILLION questions, I know...

Thanks in advance.  :)

YES!

:D

Strange - almost every allparts neck comes in two versions Finished and unfinished except the rosewood CBS neck ... But with a rattlecan of clear nitro, some wetsanding paper and maybe a little waterbased tint (or a shitload of UV) - you can't fail!

Where to buy one - dguitarparts?
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

I was looking here:

I really wish the bound neck came with a big headstock.  :(

I'd buy a can of reranch nitro clear and some of their neck amber.

Top notch, mostly made in Japan...

As for finishing, maple a little tougher than rosewood, as wetsanding between frets is tough (or a no-no, as far as I'm concerned)...

Basicly, the way I do it is...
1) 2 good coats ReRanch sand & seal (in case the dye doesn't work out, it's not embedded in the neck's grain, and you just need to wipe off using lacquer thinner)...
2) A couple LIGHT coats of the ReRanch Neck dye (it gets dark quick, verging on orange)...
3) Clear with about a can of ReRanch gloss clear...make sure last coats are wet, as you want to be as glossy as possible when you are done...
4) Let cure 30 days
5) Rub out with 3M rubbing compound, machine polish, and then high gloss polish, should look like this....

For rosewood, do the same thing, but tape off fretboard, and when all done, coat it in bore or lemon oil, then wipe off and buff out....

Howzat? :D

Aaah, but for how much $$$$?  That's the big question.  If money's no object, I'll order from Musikraft.

I'm probably going to have to wait a week or two....I want to make sure I have enough to pay off my Thinskin.

BTW, are those unfinished?

I am a big fan of Allparts necks, especially their fat models. I just ordered a SMO-Fat form Rob DiStefano at Fret Tech to go on my Warmoth Jazzmaster. He's an authorized reseller who does 40% off AP list prices, and throws in a fret end dressing on all unfinished necks free of charge. He'll also do other work like tuner hole reaming, etc.

For mine, I plan to do a Tru-oil finish. Over at the TDPRI, lots of guys have used Tru-oil with some pretty amazing results. I used it once before on some maple humbucker pickup rings and it was east to apply and looks really good. Also, it has a slight tint to it, not orange like a lot of amber tints, but just a very nice darkening of the otherwise bright raw maple color.
