Re: AVRI or CIJ
The CIJ has more strat-like pickups and a thinner neck then that of the AVRI. Also, the AVRI has the bridge cover and is generally more like the vintage 62's than the CIJs which aren't really specific to any time period

Re: AVRI or CIJ
the strings on AVRIs are longer, which gives the guitars Sustain For Days.
I'm kidding, of course.

Re: AVRI or CIJ
if we´re talking jazzmasters, the CIJ´s pickups are constructed differently than the AVRIs (which are based on the vintage ones). the CIJs have taller and narrower bobbins, similar to those of strat pickups, so they have a strat-like sound, while the AVRIs have a fuller, mellow sound like the originals (although they have been reported to be a bit brighter).
other differences:
trem units - CIJ has weaker spring and looser fitting arm, resulting in less stablility and less smooth action
finish - CIJs have polyurethane finishes, AVRIs have nitrocellulose
body and pickguard shape - CIJs are slightly different, AVRIs are exactly like vintage
even though some of the parts of the CIJs are of lesser quality, the necks and bodies are great, so a lot of people buy CIJs and upgrade them with AVRI hardware and electronics and end up with guitars that are just as good, in some cases even better than AVRIs.

The AVRI's are of generally better quality, but you pay for it. The CIJ's are great value for money, and play really nicely IMO.

It depends where you are, in the UK I'm getting mine for £371.04 from Ishibashi. But that would be different for other countries

I prefer the poly finish as it's almost indestructible.
Why should we buy postage stamps? We can make our own.

Re: AVRI or CIJ
The AV is a better made guitar, but I have both models and enjoy them.
I upgraded the pups, the pots, the switches, and that made the guitar sound much better. I still feel there is a slight difference, only in that the finish is a little nicer, and that my old CIJ I think is made of basswood. I don't really think it is sonically better or worse for being so... I simply play both guitars.
I prefer the necks on the AV. My CIJ always felt a little slower than the AV.
Otherwise, the mods to the import model bridged most of the differences, in my opinion.

Re: AVRI or CIJ
I think the original CIJ reissues were made of Basswood, which may explain it
