yeah, I think that I'll be doing something similar to this. As for pedals, I was gonna carry my pedalbag on, but check in all the guitar leads and tools as they can be funny about stuff like this.

My plan was to just stuff the pedals I wanted to bring into my gig bag and then pack all my extra bits (strings, leads, wire cutters, etc.) in my luggage.

Indeed, it would be ridiculous for them to hassle one over some guitar pedals, but when isn't flying ridiculous these days?

I'm also wondering if it will make a difference that I will be traveling with my entire band, in which two other members will be trying to bring their guitars as carry on.

From what I've read, the success rate of bringing your guitar on is directly relate to how crowded the flight is... so trying to do this with three instruments might be a real stretch.

Last question - has anyone had any luck getting them to put your instruments in the coat closet? I read a bit about some people doing that.

I have done that once....Virgin Airways wanted to check in my old 80s MIJ Jaguar (which was in a gig bag)...I flat out refused to board the plane if they did that, unless I had writen confirmation that they would pay for the guitar if it were damaged.

in the end they backed out and out it in the small coat closet onboard....this was quite a few years ago though

I've been struggling with that- I really want to go to Britain this Spring, to play some gigs and record (in the same room) with my partner in  Lust & Death, but I'm terrified of having one of my guitars trashed by an airline.  I love flying in general, but I've really come to hate and dread airports and commercial air travel.  Wish I had enough money charter a Gulfstream or something....
