Questions about old Jaguar

Post by serial » Mon Feb 26, 2007 9:05 pm

My brother had an old Sonic Blue Jaguar with matching headstock that I found for him back in the early 90s (well, actually, I found him a '53 Les Paul Goldtop and we walked around the corner and stumbled onto the Jaguar).  I had always been under the impression since then that it was a '66, but now I'm not so positive.  I vaguely remember the neck being popped and the neck stamped as "OCT 66B", but I have a few questions for you Jag experten out there.
-which tuners were correct for Oct '66? (Klusons or "F" tuners w/split shafts)?
-Which logo was correct for Oct '66?  (Gold or black "Fender")?

I pulled out pics of the blue Jag to scan and that guitar clearly had the black logo on a sonic blue head along with "F" tuners.  The "F" plate number was only in the low 200,000s, so it would work for a late '66.  Case was original, with "Fender" logo-no tail IIRC.

The reason I'm asking is that I'm restoring another '66 at the moment and need a logo and tuners so I want it to be correct!  Thanks.

Yes...what a day THAT was.  Less than $1,500 for BOTH of those beauties!

That one was definitely a '66.  Did you scan those pics of it yet?!!  ;)

I've seen both F tuners and double line klusons on 66 jags.
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

It was the black decal that threw me.  What I'm finding on the net is '68, but it also says that for the "F" tuners.  I know that Mustangs, etc had "F" tuners as early as '66.

Another thing about the decal... is it infact black or is it the gold which has oxidiised.  The gold decal of my bass VI is very dark (but definately originally gold) and it's a 67

just a thought...

I love that site but there was some conflicting info there, which got me questioning things.  Looking under the "Jaguar" link for model, it states that the black decal and "F" tuners started in '68.  Hmmm..

Yes, there is conflicting information in that site about Jaguars, however when it specs Tuners in the parts section it says Jags used F tuners starting in 66. My oct65 stamped Jag has F tuners and a gold decal. I just got through figuring all this out because my Fender "expert" friend ( actually more an expert on Strats & Teles like most Fender experts ) Told me that my Jag had to be a Fake because Fender didn't use these tuners until 68 , which is true on the guitars he deals with. ( poor backward fellow is not an offset fan)

It's about time that your avatar is actually a photo YOU took!
