That's a Fender Custom (sometimes named Maverick). They were made in 1969 and 1970.

Made from chopped XII bodies and necks and Mustang bridge/tailpieces. Only offered in Sunburst, with a solid black back. The black back concealed a wooden plug inserted to fill the route of the XII's string thru. A catalog page also list lefties as an option.

Rick Nielsen has a Fiesta Red (matching head), and I have seen a Burgundy Mist Metallic (non-matching head).
Cool guitars!
Competition Stripes make them play FASTER.

I wonder how it sounds with the z-split pickups. I have a G$L comanche with that setup and it is great.

25.5" scale, 7.25" radius.
Apparently, most of these were XII necks with shortened headstocks. A veneer was placed over the front and back of the headstock to hide the splice. I've also heard that when the XII neck were gone, they made some up specifically for the Custom/Maverick. I believe my Maverick is one of those, as there is no sign of a splice on the side of the headstock, the grain appears to be continuous from the back of the neck to the back of the headstock, and it has a '69 date stamp in red ink.
