Olympic White - fading and yellowing

Post by DB » Sun Mar 11, 2007 7:10 pm

Hey folks,

I'm looking at an "unnamed" quite rate vintage guitar, pretty rare, and naturally an offset.  My previous knowledge of the color Olympic White tells me that is shouldn't yellow with age -- only the clear coat should yellow.  Am I correct in that assumption?  If the entire finish is yellowed, is it safe to assume it is a refin?

I'm trying to figure out if a vintage instrument is a refin or not.

Thanks in advance,

Maybe?

There are a lot of variables to consider, including the formulation and type of paint they used, whether or not they sprayed an undercoat, whether they sprayed a clearcoat or not, etc...  Some original Olympic White guitars yellowed considerably, some didn't.

My understanding is that it is strictly the clear coat that yellows - there are supposedly original oly fenders without the clear that are still bright white.  When I did my refin I left off the clear so it would stay white.  I don't dig the yellowed oly's.  On;y finish I like to see yellowed is a sonic blue.

THanks guys!  I did get confirmation from the seller that is is a refin, as I thought.
