Vox AC50

Post by daydreamdelay » Fri Apr 20, 2007 11:25 am

I just found this amp and put it on hold for $950

I've had a few AC30's and have always wanted to try one of these.. I almost bought one at a shop two years ago for $1k, though it had the brown cloth so I assume it was older. There's another brown cloth one on ebay right now which is at $1k at the moment.. the seller mentioned this was a mid to late 70's model but on the vox showroom site it doesn't list the AC50 past the late 60's

is anyone familiar with these?

good deal?

I could use some speaker advice for one of my empty cabs.. though someone is selling a BLB (???) cab locally for $200 which includes an Avatar Hellatone 30 and 60 which are supposed to be the exact same as Celestions. good deal?

Yeah,  I know little about them, too. But this one looks really cool, inside and out!

Most definitely! If that is even halfway true, it will be a really great sound. It's always nice to have an amp with its own unique character. That's kind of why I love this Orange so much. I haven't really cared to get too involved with searching for "the" amp since getting it. Hopefully this Vox will work out to be like that too.

That is a ca 1970 VSL AC50 - pretty much identical to the earlier JMI amps, but less collectable.  $1000 is a little steep unless it's been thoroughly serviced.  In terms of sound and construction, AC50's kick ass - a lot more headroom than an ac50, and this one (and most of the earlier ones) are not tube-rectified and so a little less sag than an AC30.

You may want to browse through the PlexiPalace Vox forum.  AC50's are a fave over there:

these are GREAT amps. my bandmate has had two of these through the years, and i've spent a lot of time playing them. you heard right about the vox chime/marshall crunch mix. super sounding, especially through vintage greenbacks.

jazzprod just bought an AC50, i'm sure he'll tell you more about how great these are.

thanks Jetset.. how steep are we talking at $950?

this isn't the first I've heard that but he's already come down from $1100 so I don't expect any more money coming off it, I definitely don't want to overpay but it is local so no shipping, tax, and I'm sure if there's any problems I know where to find him. Also based on reading some of his posts on other boards about his amp collection over the years I get the impression it's probably been taken care of. He actually posts over on that forum.. they definitely seem to love their AC50's!

thanks Jonas.. good news then!  :?

I love greenbacks but I don't have the money for them right now.. I definitely plan on investing in a really good cab and speakers down the line though

paging jazzprod..

$950, no shipping from a known seller is a good deal.  Play it, and if you dig it, go for it.  I have yet to hear of anyone regretting buying an AC50.
