Where can I get my amp re-wrapped in white tolex?

Post by Daysleeper » Tue May 01, 2007 2:48 pm

I have a 70's Fender PA 100 (Built exactly like a Twin with 4 channels). I would like to get it refinished or re-wrapped in white or blonde. Is it hard to find places that do this?

When I've had that done I sourced the material myself so I knew there wouldn't be any "almost" substitutions, and then I found a local amp builder - they're pretty well setup to do these things. Maybe looking at the Ted Weber site for amp builders in your area could be the most direct way to go.

There might also be some online resources - it's not rocket science but it does take a bit of patience & skill.

Retolexing isn't that hard.  Get some 3M Super 77 Spray adhesive, some sandpaper and a heat gun and you're off to the races.  My first (of two) projects turned out nicely and it had a real PITA factor lining up checkers.

all sorts of tolex and grill cloth can be had from ce distribution.  they only do wholesale accounts to businesses though.  you can buy there products through there retail site called antique electronics.  if they won't give you a wholesale account and you don't want to pay there retail, i have a wholesale account with them and could order for you.  very good prices and they have lots of cool stuff.

+1 for DIY. I have done both tweed and tolex - just needs a bit of patience. You only need a yard for small to medium amps, and a can of neoprene adhesive.

Mojotone or Ampwares are just two places that sell it by the yard. It's cheaper and probably quicker to do it yourself, and if you really make a bollocks of it, it's only cost you 30 bucks.

The other upside is you get high on the glue 8)

I used wood putty to fill any dents and other flaws. Sanded again, then cleaned the surface with some mild soap and water. After that, I traced the old tolex on a yard (bought on Ebay) of black tolex. I cut the tolex using an exacto knife. I brushed on dap contact cement (I wouldn't recommend spray adhesive). I did one section at a time, using push pins to keep the tolex adhered till the glue dried. I used my hands and a hair drier (don't overheat the tolex it will stretch!) to remove any air bubbles. And...it came out remarkably good! This is the only amp I have ever done and wouldn't hesitate to do it again. It only took two afternoons to do the entire work.
That looks really good.  It only took one yard?  I was thinking of re-covering my SF Twin.  Do you think a yard would do it?
